Gil_87
Ok, now i've seen some lazer/radar detection units for cars at target and auto parts stores. the ones i see most are by a company named COBRA. I like to drive fast, and my last car was impounded for exhebisionist driving (sp?) now i've wisened up but sometimes you have that itch to race! i would like to know how these systems work exactly and what is a good price range for affordable 'cop' protection? You're not gonna like this answer, but the best *affordable* cop protection is to not drive to fast. Radar/Lidar/Laser detectors WILL NOT save you from Pulse or Instant-On devices. TS John
Your last car got impounded? I like to think of that as the "idiot tax." Sucks, but apparently you still have yet to learn your lesson.
Brian3311
There is a time and place to drive fast. Learn where your local cops hang out and save fast driving for roads known to have less cop watch. Otherwise dont drive like a pissed off teenager. TLontheDL
I have a escort that I borrowed from my sister. It only goes off if there their radar is on. They can have it off, pass right by you and my radar won't go off. It only works if the radar is on. Valentine 1 tells you where the radar is coming from though using arrows. my sisters escort and valentine 1 cost around 350 bucks. I wouldn't waste my money on it. Id just drive the speed limit

Attaus
Radar detectors warn you when a cop is actively scanning speeds, and 60-65% of the time I see cops they aren't radaring. They won't save your dumb ass from getting exhibition of speed tickets.

airjordan223
radars are good for saving your ass from stupid tickets like 57 in a 50, not from doing 100 in a 50. my dad has a valentine 1 and hasnt gotten a ticket since he bought it like 5 years ago. Gil_87
Hmm...valentine 1 seems to be good... but yes, obaying the speed limit is the best solution, of course this is already known. well a simple question answered, thanks fellas
That Guy
ive heard that there is actually a cd similar to the navigation cds u put in a navigation system. that will point out where every cop is on the current part of the map that is in ur screen, radar or not. i heard about it 2 or more years ago but im sure by now if it was true that it would be out by now. that would save ur ass more then any detector cuz you would know ahead of time where not to drive fast. not just be warned that there might be a cop ahead, some detectors get alot of false alarms. i have a one of cobras higher end detectors and some radio shack special for my bike, i dont use either one lately i just do the speed limit

CleanGSR
Wow, looks like I got in late on this thread. I have Cobra's best one they make and it's alright. It was around 179.00 and does fine. The only times I speed are going through town where the speed limit drops and I sometimes forget to drop from 35 to 25. There are a few of those areas that are easy to forget about and the radar has saved me a couple times from that. I also set my cruise at about 5 over on the highway and the radar usually gives me a little notice to drop back down to the speed limit ( I probably wouldn't get pulled over for 5 over anyway, but just to be safe). I also just like to know when I'm being shot with a radar, whether I'm speeding or not. Of course, if you get pulled over and a cop sees a radar, you're about garunteed to get a ticket. As for the best radars, I'd say it's between the Passport 8500 and Valentine. I would go with the valentine for a couple reasons. My dad has 2 8500's and the suction cups/mounting hardware sucks. He has to take it off the windshield when he stops because the sun will heat up the suction cups and make the radar pull out of them (8500 is heavy for a radar). Also my dad's display "service required" every now and then. A simple power off/on fixes it, but it's still annoying.
sohcVTEC-E
I have a good old whistler. It's okay but I get a lot of interference. We are allowed to have radars in MI
Pballer2005
radar is legal in ca. i read a little something on arnarchy's cookbook on how to make a radar scrambler from parts from radio shack. how the hell would you scramble lazer radar, isn't it just a beam of light? that k40 thing said it has lazer scrambler, how's that work? Jeffro
On that bluetooth radar detector site that chubs posted, there is an optional part that says: With Laser Defuser® (optional) you’ll deactivate police laser capability by emitting a powerful infrared signal back to the gun at a pulse rate the gun can’t understand. It actually deactivates the ability of the laser gun to measure speed, while you receive audio & visual warnings that give you the precious time you need to react and reduce your speed. I've heard of jamming regular radar too, and I don't know if that particular one does it, but that atleast answers your question!
