Hawaii is the other state that doesn't observe DST.

Lina pretty much hit it on the head...by extending the amount of light in the evenings since the sun vs. the tilt of the earth shifts when the sun goes up or down. Places along the equator don't observe DST since their days/nights are evenly split.

Indiana observes a bastardized version of it. Only half the state observes DST. Something to do with the fact that nothing useful comes out of IN aside from the fact that a large portion of the population is part of the chi-town burbs - the run down crime infested Gary burbs.

I would hate that.

Half the state is hour ahead while the other is a hour behind.

yea, but the other half of the year the time is the same between the two sides!
