Final drive?

Recommended Posts

you know how your axles plug into your tranny from either side right. well there plugging into your differential. your final drive gear is bolted to your differential.

heres a pic of it:

the final drive is the piece with teeth all the way around the outside. the number of teeth on that wheel with teeth is what makes your final drive ratio what it is. so more teeth on that wheel the lower you will rev on highway , and the less it has the higher youl rev. in order to change your final drive , removal of trans and trans breakdown is required. not a job for the do it yourselfer without the tools or know how. i could do it for you but im sure were at least 1000 miles apart , haha.

It is the ring gear on your diff and the counter shaft itself.

Higher numerically the fast you will be. Cost ranges from $400-$1,500 ($400 being OEM 4.7, 1,500 being Houseman). Install is usually $600+ or so by a regular shop.

i thought you need to count the teeth on the ring gear and then count the teeth on the pinion gear, then divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion gear and that gives you the final drive ratio. im pretty sure thats how you find out.
