Ballinfrogs
Alright I understand the last numbers but can anyone explain to me the first one. I looked online and got an explanation. but didint really understand it. Can anyone explain the whole thing to me in stupid terms please?
SolLesHonda
The first number = the width of the tire in mm The second number = the percentage of the width, which is how tall the sidewall is. The third number = the size of the wheel.
Ballinfrogs
so if I have a low second number and a high first number, that will give me the lowest profile?

Ballinfrogs
so then whats the difference in a 205/40/17 and a 215/45/17? both the numbers go up.
mountaindewguy
the 215/45 is a wider and taller sidewall tire. the 205/40 is not quite as wide, and a more lower profile.
Ballinfrogs
so what would look better then? isnt wider worse? or is it width from beind so it would look cooler?
mountaindewguy
what vehicle is it on? personally, if its a civic, and its lowered, and you HAVN'T bought the rims yet, get 16's. they still look great but wont get as bumpy of a ride.

Pyrorocketeer
the wider the tire is obviously the larger contact patch you have with the road. so the more grip you have. the higher the sidewall the tires want to "roll" (left or right) around the rim, and not with the rim. lower profile tires help prevent that, as do stiffer side walls. also there is a limit on how wide you can go and still be benificial like in autocross racing. they know that there is only a certain ammount of tire they can heat up while going around the turns. to wide of tire means they won't get to optimum temp, and provide less traction than say a smaller tire that can reach optimum temp. So there is a healthy medium one needs to reach.
cranny
so then whats the difference in a 205/40/17 and a 215/45/17? both the numbers go up. both nombers dont go up together but if you change one of the dimensions the other changes as well. so if you have 205/40/17's , and you want to put a wider tire on it , and decide to go with a 215/40/17 , than because you have increased width by 1 cm(first # is width in millimeters) , that means your profile(second number , which is 40% of the width from the rim to the road) will also increase even though same number on tire. this is cause its 40% of whatever the width is. but if you change middle number only than width stays same but sidewalls curl towards tread the higher profile you go. low profiles have straight sidewalls for the most part. last number is like solles said , rim size or diameter. CleanGSR
I was about to type something about the same when I saw your post cranny. Good post. Changing the first number will change the side of the sidewall too. So as stated a way's above, A high first number and low second number will not give the lowest profile. A smaller first number and a smaller second number will give the smallest profile.
