What Do You Guys Think Of The Scion Bbx

Recommended Posts

toyota decided to come out with another spinoff compnay (eg. lexus) named Scion. the first vehicle released will be the US version of the japanese Toyota bB. it will be called the Scion bbX. what do you guys think of it? i'll scan a pic out of magazine, but the quality will suck and the pic might be kinda big.

anyway. i dont really like to boxy exterior look, but i think the interior kicks ass. there already is a huge aftermarket in japan. Greddy already makes turbochargers for it. and there are tons of body kits. even TRD is going to make performance products for it.

prices for the bbX are expected to be between $13K and $17K. i think that's a great price. with a few upgrades maybe it wont look so much like a chevy astro and a bmw mated.

EDIT: I scanned the pic, but the file is too big. sorry

make it to jpg... if thats too big, go to "paint" and im sure every computer has paint. (start...program...accessories..paint) once thats open, go to file and open up that pic. once its open, go to "image" then "stretch/skew" and decrease it from there. then save it and try to reload the pic on here again :)

What is it?

Scion bbX

What's special about it?

Scion is Toyota's latest attempt at global domination. Not merely content at standing by and watching youngsters fritter away dollars on such things as clothes and drumsticks, the company is introducing a line of vehicles to appeal to the under-25 demographic. Scion (defined as "heir" or "descendent") is supposed to offer Toyota heritage and renowned reliability, only without the taint of -- gasp -- sensibility or blandness that one usually associates with Toyota vehicles.

Three elements define Scion's philosophy: style, versatility and surprise. These apply to the product as well as the purchase process, which Toyota describes will be "low-key and buyer-friendly with a stylish décor and polished industrial feel." Sounds like the lobby of a W Hotel. All vehicles in the lineup will also be well-equipped so that there is no pressure to buy expensive options. Scion is set to launch in June 2003 with two vehicles, and two were displayed in New York. The ccX was displayed at the Detroit Auto Show less than three months ago, and the bbX concept was unveiled today. Actually, it wasn't unveiled, since it's not officially new, but is a show car based on a vehicle available now in Japan; the bb stands for Black Box. Both of these vehicles will be priced under $18,000.

The bbX, another cubist vehicle, is much like the Honda Element that was also shown at the New York Auto Show. It sports a 1,350-watt audio/video system by Pioneer and is designed and equipped as a "rolling sound studio" with an in-dash DVD/CD player with headrest-mounted monitors for the rear passengers. The bbX will allow for a wide range of customization by creative types.

Why should you care?

Are you young, not Paris or Nicky Hilton, but rich enough to buy a new car? Toyota will go to great lengths to reach you. The company has already worked toward warming the Net Gen with the Celica and MR2, but Scion will allow it to custom-market its advertising campaign for the dispossessed under 25 crowd, much in the way Lexus reaches the affluent. We're not sure that putting in so many resources toward wooing a population that doesn't have resources yet, but hey, it looks like the bbX will hold plenty of pizza boxes for those who are really motivated to purchase a new car. Scion will launch in California in June 2003. -- Liz Kim

What is it?

Toyota ccX Concept

What's special about it?

Toyota is getting ready to take serious aim at the North American youth market, and introduced the ccX concept vehicle to show some of the ideas that the company hopes to include on future products whose mission it will be to attract buyers too young to remember seeing Top Gun in theaters. What does ccX stand for? What else: concept coupe Crossover. (Based on what's been shown in Detroit for 2002, the car manufacturers can't create anything but crossover vehicles anymore.)

To our eyes, the angular and backswept ccX looks like a Japanese knockoff of a Ford Focus ZX3. It is essentially a three-door hatchback with the kinds of interesting features and details that always separate production and concept cars.

For instance, the roof has two large sunroofs made up of four glass panels that tilt up individually and then slide fore and aft to create a huge hole in the roof. In back, the rear glass hatch panel is a two-piece unit that can be retracted into the bumper for easy access to the cargo area. Six tie-down hooks are available for strapping down cargo, and a removable cooler plugs into a 12-volt outlet to keep beverages frosty cold.

Seats are see-through, made of a washable neoprene fabric and mesh netting. Four adults will be comfortable on board, with front-seat occupants getting five-point restraint harnesses. Sliding storage drawers are located beneath the front seats, and the floor is waterproof, constructed of metal and rubber with four drain holes for easy cleaning. The rear seats fold forward to maximize cargo capacity, and a metal divider rises to protect the front seatbacks from mud or puncture from sharp objects.

Trick electronics on the ccX include a DVD-based navigation and entertainment system as well as a hand-sensitive door entry system that automatically opens the doors for easy entry. LED turn signals are incorporated on the backs of the sideview mirrors.

The ccX is powered by a 2.4-liter dual overhead cam inline four-cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The wheels and tires are large, measuring 18 inches in diameter, the same as the brake rotors. The ccX weighs 2,810 pounds.

Why should you care?

The ccX gives clues about how Toyota plans to tackle the thorny issue of attracting new blood to an increasingly "mature" brand. If you like what you see here, chances are you'll be interested in several upcoming models designed to introduce Toyota to the hormonally charged. — Christian Wardlaw

thanks drew. those interior shots are the from the October 2002 issue of Auto Sound & Security. the system in the demo bbX was installed by Competition Soundworks in SoCal. the regular bbX comes with a factory six speaker pioneer system with a DSP tuned to the interior's acoustics.
