hondadrifter
okay i have a 95 civic ex as most of you already know i was just wondering if it would it help to get like a 91 civic si's gears because i guess the ratios are better for that year like for example if i redline my car and then i shift the rpms drop below 5 grand which totally kills acceleration because now vtec is disengaged and you want to stay in vtec as long as you can i don't know i was just asking for opinions on changing gear ratios......what do you guys think? VR17
the tranny swap would work just fine, i dont think it would be a problem need of speed, it shouldnt drop, even when you decide to but that tranny...
optional187
i thought vtec engaged at 4500...?
S14Silvia
ex the vtec cross over is around 5k, on a b16, which would be a better tranny to run (not sure if you can put it on a d-series) the vtec cross over is 4400-4600
BuddySol
Yah, specs say the VTEC crossover for a d16 is 5200...but it depends really on temp and throttle position. So basically around 5k.
optional187
here's the following places i've heard it crosses over: 4200 4250 4400 4425 4500 - which is what i thought cause i notice a big jump when my rev's hit 4500. especially in 2nd 4650 and now: 5000 5200 i don't know what to believe :(
BuddySol
According to the butt dyno, while gunning it seems like my VTEC would kick in before 5k. But I dunno, it's hard to tell in SOHC engines.
S14Silvia
sohc its really hard to tell, but stock its supposed to be around 5k, with the dohc's you can actually hear where it crosses over right around 4400-4800 depending on what year your motor is
optional187
when you hear it...what does it sound like? is it a kinda whiny sound? hard to explain...
BuddySol
You can kind of hear the difference with a CAI or short ram. Give it a little more air to breath, and once you hit VTEC, it's LOUD!
S14Silvia
it sounds like a whole different car, just the engine noise is alot louder.. hard to explain you really have to hear it for yourself...
optional187
hard to explain you really have to hear it for yourself... yeah, i've heard it for myself. i just can't find the words to explain it. i can make the noise, i can think of it, i just can't find the words to 'splain it. anyways, i notice the noise start to kick in at around 4500, but you can really hear it at about 5700-redline. thats just when its most audible, but it gradually moves up as you go through the revs. i know its not a belt or something cause it only does it after 4500...
