shaking steering wheel

if your absolutely sure there balanced properly(most places absolutely blow at balancing wheels cause they static balance them and its not proper), than you may have a warped rotor causing your prolem. a warped hub assembly(which most likely youd feel before 70mph), or a warped wheel perhaps .if tires are old it could be a broken or damaged steel belt in your tire. if your wheel bearing was bad youd hear it howling at that speed. and if your axle was bad enough that it was causing vibration youd most likely not feel it in the steering wheel but in the car itself.

sounds like you may have a worn out hub , are you static balancing the wheels? its a 95 so i had the same prolem with my 91 hatch. the dam thing shimmied for the last 3 years i owned it no matter what i fixed. i chalked it up as a slightly warped hub givin the fact i replaced eberythin else , haha. id say its a hub dude. even the haynes manual for your car(which i looked at for ya), says it could be a warped or damaged hub. new brakes , fresh balance? i mean whats left?hubs id say.

doesnt really matter the age though , cause it only takes one big bump and thats it never the same again. i was drivin an older guy home from work at dawn with my civic you see below . they had a strip tore out of the road from one side to the other and it was twilight i couldnt see how bad it was. hit doin like 50km/h or 30m/h and it bent 2 of my 17's and threw my allignment off(bent somin). wasnt impressed at all in fact i was cursin and swearin like a madman in this nice neighborhood at about 630 am. wasnt a good scene.hahaha.

thats the worst wheel in the pic.

I had almost the exact same problem but it was my tire pressure and balancing because they messed up when balancing them, so like the saying goes "If you want it done right, Do it yourself." but its fine now... you also might want to check the inside and outside of your wheels because you might have bent your wheel or there might have been too much pressure on the inside of the wheel and it might have bent...( happened to my stepdads truck, yes i know there is a wieght difference in a truck and a civic) If its not any of the things i said, i have no idea at all...-_-

when my wheel bearing was bad on my del sol, it made a noise, never shook my car. and it didnt do it all the time. you might have a warped rotor if they werent put back on right or in the right way.

its not the bearings , bearings howl not shake. and yes warped rotors can make your wheel shake even though your not braking. dude im gonna tell you this and save you money if you listen , in order for them to put front wheel bearings on dude they have to seperate your hubs from your spindles. im tellin you its most likely a hub cause it happens in hondas alot. now if you go put wheel bearing on and dont change the hubs that means that youl have to pay someone to seperate them again. as far as the brake rotors not bein installed right well as long as hub was cleaned and rotor seated with no play on it than id say they were put on right. you got warped hubs dude or hub.can you remeber when it started doin it or did it always do it?

Did you rule out ball joints, bushings & alignment? FYI a bearing will make the car shake. I just changed mine this weekend, it started as the typical humming, then went to vibration that can be felt through the pedals, then finally it could be felt in the steering wheel and eventually began pulling right. I knew the bearing was bad from when I did the balljoints, tie rods ends and bushings on that side, I just put it off until it got really bad.

My 93 Civic shook from 70-80mph then smoothed out, my 94 now does the same thing. I gave up on my 90 hatch, it had a shake in the right front that drove me nuts for over a year & I gave up checking & replacing crap.

dude please dont jump in without reading the rest thats been said. only thing that can make your wheel shake is something thats turning with the wheels and out of balance , period.

Sorry...you are apparently the know all, I apologize for second guessing your vast knowledge. I read the post. So suspension has nothing to do with a shaking wheel? Since the only thing that can make the wheel shake is something that turns? Then what does the bearing do dipcrap?... oh yeah...it turns. That's what bearings do, I figured you had that kind of advanced technology figured out by now I'm wrong anyhow but a bad bearing is 'out of balance', take the wheel off a car with a bad wheel bearing, pull the rotor and what does it do when you move the front hub? IT WOBBLES ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE, seeing how the lug nuts hold the wheel to the front hub any sliver of common sense would tell me the wheel would probably shake too. How you damage the hub without hurting the bearing is a new one to me since the bearing is pressed onto the hub, which then is pressed into the knuckle. My wheel shook, I changed the bearing....NOTHING else and it stopped. Did you even read my post? I'm pretty sure I mentioned that. So if you have a bad front lower arm to chassis bushing that allows the arm to shift while driving you won't feel that through the wheel....whatever.

Sorry for giving my input, cranny is the suspension god.

xalexjx@yahoo.com fell free to consider my thoughts but you're apparently better off having the wheel balanced over & over again & never having to replace any suspension parts since they don't rotate or have any effect on driveability.

likely cases...

tyre problems (i.e. small lumps weak spots etc)

rim damage

brake disc balance / alignment or (see if the disc is flat)

ball joint

loose wheel barring

whats it like if you brake hard from 40+ mph does it wobble?

yeah i already said that it might be a tire or wheel problem but he said that it did it with his stock rims also... it could be a ball joint or loose wheel bearring...

im only gonna say it one more time , an alignment bein off can NOT make your car shake. its definitely hub or wheel issue. dumass on the other post was rippin me talkin about bearings causin the prolem , gee youd think if a wheel bearing was bad enough to make the car shimmy it would at least howl and make noise eh?? maybe not. if it shakes with both sets of wheels , than deductive reaosning tells me thats it somin to with the car not the wheels in this particular case. he says he replaced the brakes so well eliminate them. if it was a bearing im sure hed hear it and have a clue thats what it was(which i doubt). im stickin to my guns its a hub. as far as joints goes , if he does have well say loose lower balls or tierods , than youl feel the shakin more but theres still somin turning out of balance thats creating the shimmy.

I'm curious to know what kind of magic is involved to damage the hub & not effect the bearing. I'm not saying your wrong, your just so quick to jump on other people's crap who second guess you, the fact is the hub is pressed into the bearing.

I don't recall ever saying that a bad bearing didn't make noise.
