James Matteu
What is up with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration? http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ The list of Non-conforming Honda/Acura eligible for import: Acura Legend 1988-1992 Honda Accord 1991-1999 Honda Accord (sedan & wagon (RHD)) 1994-1997 Honda Civic DX Hatchback 1989 Honda CRV 2002 Honda Prelude 1994-1997 Honda Prelude 1989 leaves much to be desired. How is someone supposed to import a RHD 2004 Integra, or an AWD Fit, or a 1991 CRX Si-R w/Glasstop? The only car from the above list that would ever spark my interest would be 5th Generation Honda Accord AWD Wagon or a 1988 Legend Ti. What confuses me is a) why does a Registered Importer (RI) have to do the work to bring a car up to DOT spec, b) why do RIs seem to specialize in vehicles already in the US? I called a few RIs in Florida and stopped on #5 when I realized they only do European cars (but not Mercedes A-Class, go figure) and not Japanese. For the CRXs, I think a US cat could be welded in place (or bolted if possible), headlight/taillights could be swapped out with the DOT spec set, and the ECU could be chipped to meet emissions. Totally worth it if you end up with a RHD 2+2 glasstop Rex. Opinions, info, help.
