Carbon Fiber Hood Troubles

Hey, got in an accident a whiile ago which totally crunched the passenger side of my hood and di some damage to the front end (which I have since pulled back out) up to the wheel well. I replaced the hood with a carbon fiber one I found on E-bay but it won't line up properly. It seems to be too far forward and not lining up with the new passenger side fender (which I replaced with fiber-glass z-3 style ones).

Has anyone else had trouble installing their CF hood before?

Well, are you sure it didn't mess up the structure of your car (i.e. unibody). Aftermarket parts almost never fit as perfectly as the factory, although messing with the alignment of the fenders and such will help change the alignment of the hood some. I know a lot of times with ebay parts, the quality may not be as good as one from a well known company like VIS. What company made the hood?

should sell the fenders and go back to factory fenders. part of the problem is probably the aftermarket fenders.

after that, put the hood back on ebay and either get another factory hood, or at least go with a fiber images hood (best fitment in that price range).

I'm not sure who makes the hood, however as I compare it to the factory hood it looks pretty close. At least close enought that it shouldn't be as tweeked as it is. The mounting holes line up perfectly. I'm starting to wonder if the accident bent one, or both of the hood mounting brackets. Again the fenders seem to fit fine, or as fine as fiber glass fenders do anyways. Thanks for your help

You could go to an auto salvage place and find a good set of hood mounting brackets for pretty cheap. That would be an easy way to see if that was the problem. That or you could bend the ones you have until your hood lines up.

my friend had a Del Sol and his cf hood didn't allign neither..it covered like half his passenger side headlight.....and mine CF hood fits perfect...sometimes it's just luck whether the hood will fit or not..but i wouldn't buy any parts of ebay..espicially a cf hood..is it VIS??

a lot of it can depend on the run of the hood. but, as with all other aftermarket parts, the price tag has a lot to do with it as well (fitment, quality). as i said before, within the lesser price range, a fiber images hood is the best bet. vis can be alright as well, but when it comes to their hoods you really have to get lucky. i have the vis crx sir hood, and was one of the lucky ones.

CRG so you're saying that not all VIS hoods fit properly and fiber images do?

no, that is not what i am saying. there will always be runs of hoods that are not perfect. however, there have been more issues with ViS hoods not fitting properly (as well as various other issues) than there have been with FI.

CivicRacingGirl7 has it dead on the nose. Fiber Images makes the ONLY one I've ever seen that fit EXACTLY like stock (and I've seen a mondo buttload of them)

btw, carbon fiber isn't all it's cracked up to be. The shop that does my paint has had 1 or 2 people come in every week for the past year b/c their carbon fiber hoods' finish has deteriorated and flaked ( they get all splotchy, rotted, and gross looking ). It's b/c of UV rays eating the clearcoat off --> even the ones that are guaranteed "UV Protected".

It seems that carbon fiber became popular about 3 or 4 years ago. Now those hoods are rotting and look like doodoo and the paint shops are painting over them....

(((( do your own research: Call a couple of specialty "show level" paint shops in your area and ask them if they've seen carbon fiber go icky at an increasing rate lately )))

That's true. We got a VIS Racing invader hood for my dad's integra about 3 years ago and this year it started fading and getting hazey pretty badly. We have a really good shop that does our body work though and they were able to sand through all the uv clearcoat and sprayed 6 coats of actual clearcoat paint on it. It looks better than it did when we got it and it only cost us $150.00 to get it done.

The VIS hood on his Integra fit perfectly though. Of course, the VIS hood I had on my 93 celica didn't fit perfect. It sat higher on one side that the other. So, I think it is hard to tell. I'm going to buy my next one from a local import shop, so if it doesn't fit properly then they will have to get me a new one.

The hood on my sol has some paint issues and I was thinking of getting a CF hood. Would I be better off just getting the stock hood repaint or get a CF hood and run the risk of it not fiting right. Also where can I find a good price on painting or a CF hood. I looked at Ebay but have herd to many horror stories.

it would cost less to get the stock hood repainted. if you want pricing on hoods, PM me.
