dawrenn
My car is slow and I want to make it faster. What should I do? Turbo or engine swap? My D16Y8 has 95,xxx I do all the basic mantinence but I dont know the conditon of the engine or how much longer its going to last because I drive it kinda hard. I have probably taken it to redline about 15 times since I bought the car 2 years ago with 69.xxx miles. I would rather turbo it but someone told me that my mileage was too high to do so and I dont know if the engine will be able to handle it. What do I need to check to see if it can handle turbo? I heard that I could get a compression and leak test to see if the engine is still in good shape. Is that true? Where would I go to get that done? Either way I am going to be spending around $5000. ..SSR..
15 times? Wow, I do that in a week. Get an Edelbrock kit and have me build a shortblock.
dawrenn
15 times? Wow, I do that in a week. Get an Edelbrock kit and have me build a shortblock. I thought 15 times was bad. How much is an Edelbrock kit and how much would a shortblock cost to be built?
..SSR..
Edelbrock kit is around 3,300. Short block is 1,600-1,800 The Edelbrock kit maxes out at 250whp. A bigger turbo you can make more, but then you need a new EMS and the turbo/EMS the kit comes with is pretty much why people buy it. It is a Garrett GT28 turbo internally WG'd at 7psi. Spearco FMIC, piping, JC PX IM, Edelbrock EMS, Autometer boost gauge, etc.

xxscaxx
bringing it up to redline isnt that bad. if you bring it past redline its a different story.
dcletten
seriously though, how high is too high milage wise to turbo a motor without doing anything else internally running like 5psi?

SexyH22
if an engine is properly taken care of, any amount of miles shouldnt be too bad for a turbo... i've seen guys w/ 200k+ still boosting there cars w/out fail. it is all about tuning, fuel, and how you treat your car. i have always been a fan of builing a kit rather than buying a preman. kit. you will spend lesss than half the mon ey, and it will usually consist of better parts, but you need to do some research before jumping into it. ..SSR..
Stock block can take 7psi. Edelbrock kit made 178whp at 7psi on a 98 (I think) EX with an exhaust. With the bottom end built you can take it up to 18psi (Edelbrock EMS only compensates up to 18psi). You're only like 7 hours away from me so it would probably be cheaper to deliver it to you, unless you just want to pay shipping. I have a spare Y8 block here I can build to minimize your downtime. I'll get a price on the Edelbrock kit for you tomorrow.

Would anything have to be built on the head? How much would the shipping be? I wouldnt really want to spend extra money if I did not have to. How hard would it be to replace my short block the the built one? Would I be able to use it before I got a turbo kit? Would there be anymore power with it being built? Thanks that would be cool. dcletten
ok, i got a 93 civic dx, with a d15b7, yeai know crapty, but say i do wanna turbo that motor, yea, i take it through the gears every once in a while, but the motor seems fine, no oil, runs good, idles fine, its got 144,000 miles on it. nothing done internally. think it would hold? im speaking hypothetically here, theres no way i would do it to that motor. xxscaxx
oh no, not this again. dont boost your d15, unless you do a mini me like that guy ssr told you about. even so its not worth it imo, you can just buy a d16 and turbo that if you want. id say save up for a B series but its all up to you. dcletten
i was actually thinking about a minime, a guy i know has a d16 head hes tryying to get rid of, so i might minime it now and save money for a b-series.
SexyH22
a mini me doesnt replace the bottom end which is weak as crap in a d15
dcletten
i know a minime doesnt, its a d16z6 head on a d15 block, but obviously if he is fine, then it should be ok
..SSR..
The gain in CR you get with a B7 mini-me makes up for the displacement. The stock bottom end is fine unless you want big power, which is either 8psi+ or more RPM.
civic94
ssr you tight man.. where you live at.. i need hook ups too.. my car needs repair too.. help me man.. but yeah edelbrock is what i would suggest..
