Knock on start up

Hey guys first time posting so sorry if this is in the wrong section. I'm thinking of getting a 1998 CRV from a friend but the thing is it makes a knocking noise for about 2-3 seconds on startup and every so often briefly makes a similar sound with the engine running. The guy I'm thinking of getting it from says it's because it needs an oil change. Anyone know anything about these sounds or have any advice? Thanks

I'd try an oil/filter change, some higher octane fuel, and see if it goes away. It might need a valve adjustment though.
