Short video of the noises

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MRfBjGuQJY

Storytime:

sound appears to be emanating from the driver side of engine compartment, nearby the belts.

was not making noises, then suddenly this horrible noise started when i started the car.

no obvious problem with the belts. they seem tight and relatively fresh

oil level looks good

alternator looks beat up and old

OBD code P0440 (gas cap code) has been triggering the check engine light for a while now

My questions:

What are the likely causes of such ghastly noise? What can I do about it?

The code P0440 is associated with Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction and could mean one or more of the following has happened:

The gas cap is not installed or working properly

The purge solenoid has failed

The canister is plugged and not working properly

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. It is recommended to check with automotive experts soon.
