96 heating core question

When I shut off the car after it runs a while, the fan in the front of the hood turns back on and runs for a minute or so. I'm getting leaking inside the car on the passenger side under the glove compartment, and the windows in car will fog up often while I'm driving. I took the car to a shop and told them this and he immediately said it was the heater core and it would be about $1,000 job. So does anyone know if this is right, and if this a job I can do myself? Thanks.

To get the heater core out you have to remove the dash. It's tedious, not impossible. No special tools needed, but it can take a day or more depending on your experience level.

I would say $1000 is a low estimate, so, expect it to be more.
