swapping gas tanks

we just did it with our hatches. its easy. waht all do you need to know?

here is all the steps we took:

UNPLUG NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE FROM BATTERY!

NO OPEN FLAMES OR LIGHT BULBS!

DO THIS OUTSIDE SO YOU DONT GET HIGH LIKE ME AND MY DAD DID!

TOOLS NEEDED:

SOCKET SET

IMPACT GUN OR RATCHET WRENCH

PHILIPS SCREW DRIVER

FLAT TIP SCREW DRIVER

first off put the car up on ramps and jack the front/back up. youll need to get under the car and it will take two people

1. drain all gas from tank(you should have a plug on the tank if it is still the stock one) just use that and drain it

2. while the gas is draining remove the back seats, this allows you to get to the sending unit under the back seat. it is under the liver plate

3. take the silver plate loose without removing it from the wire. make sure the plug stays in the silver plate. follow by unplugging all the wires from the sending unit

4. there will be a circular plate on top of the sending unit, it has to be turned counter clockwise so the grooves match so it can come out. do this carefully as to not

allow any sparks YOU WILL BLOW UP!

5. remove the two shields on the side of the gas tank to expose the fuel lines

6. make sure all the gas is drained. if need lower the back of the car to the side for the plug to completely drain the tank. once it is drained put the plug back on

7. remove all fuel lines from the tank and plug the holes with something so the remaining gas will not leak.

8. undo the two straps that hold the gas tank in place and drop the tank. then pull the fill neck off(held on by clamp)

--------------------it will be heavier than you think so make sure there is another person to help you

9. slide old gas tank out from under car while being careful to not bed the straps in any way.

10. remove rubber pieces from old tank and try to put them on new tank. just spray a light coat of under coating then stick them to the tank. follow by

undercoating the tank competely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! top and bottom

11. undercoat the bottom side of the car right above the gas tank, but cover the hole for the sending unit

so you dont do what we did and spray the interior with undercoating :glare:

12. once two good coats have been applied let it dry completely

13. put new tank in car and put everything back together.

IT IS HIGHLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU USE A AIR COMPRESSOR TO SPRAY THE LINES FREE OF ANY DEBRIS BEFORE PUTTING NEW TANK ON!

---simply undo the plug underneath the hood and cover it in a rag so gas wont spray everywhere.

---------i also highly suggest replacing the fuel pump and sock(which should come attached to the new pump). because if your tank is old the pump will most likely need replacing anyways. its like the clutch..if your gonna replace the clutch do the pressure plate and flywheel too.

once it is all said and done it will take 5-6 times of trying to start the car for fuel to get into the lines, so dont worry if it doesnt start right away...and make sure you put gas into the new tank lol

thast about it for a basic rundown. you may have to remove the back part of the exhaust because it gets in the way somewhat. we didnt so its possible to do it while not removing it

no, you have to drop tanks to get to the fuel pump. just take a piece of sand paper to the rust BY HAND! no sanders once most of the rust has been sanded free wipe it clean and spray it with undercoat
