I do HPDE events and SCCA autocross.

I suggest signing up for an SCCA membership and do autocross for a year. It helps you pickup on all the little things about your car, tires pressure and temps, brake pad compounds, throttle feel... then after that start getting into HPDE events. I normally just tag on with some other clubs to go racing. BMWCCA always has a ton of events and they open up registration to anyone.

absolutely.

You'll be more competitive in stock class than I am in my heavily modified class.

I know lots of guys who will rent a stock crappy car to autocross if theirs isnt running for an event. Just dont tell your insurance company or the rental place.

Risk? Yes.

Odds? very very low.

Although at my most recent autocross the university put signs all over the parking lot making it marginally unsafe. They adjusted the course and went on as planned regaurdless... the change of course made it so when a guy slid really far wide around a turn and lost control he ended up in the spectators area and some lady broke her leg. This is not typical, in fact they got in deep crap for letting the event go on after the original safety concerns.

But that is the ONLY accident I have ever seen during autocross.

They specifically setup the course so that if you loose control and slide all over the place you dont hit anything.

nope, no damage to anything. Even the wear on your tires and brake pads isn't too bad. Once you do it often you will want to upgrade to some decent brake pads and better tires slightly more often than your used to.

To tech in, all they check for is that you emptied your trunk and cabin, nothing loose at all. and that the battery is properly tied down.

If your not good at driving stick.. then yes, you can ruin some syncros. But that can happen off the track too. My syncros got ruined when I tried to teach my sister how to drive stick.

Damage at HPDEs are completely different than autocross. At an HPDE you take on a lot more risk at much higher speeds. Again they try to limit risk by having an instructor in every car and by limiting passing to the straight when you are waved by. Still, the point of an HPDE is to push your car to its limits around turns at high speed. spinning and going into a tire wall is a possibility.
