Damn it!

pull the code and see what it is. when check engine lights come on that means it's something to do with your emissions on the car. it could be as simple as a bad gas cap, or an o2 sensor for example. pull that code and see what it is.

Not entirely true. It covers more than just emissions.

False.

how is that false? bro i'm going to school for this crap right now as we speak. this subject is actually being covered in my class.

check engine lights exist because of smog laws. so if your car isn't running efficiently then you will throw a CEL.

what in your car or any car for that matter would throw a CEL that's NOT emissions related?

also if you're gonna make a statement like that it's good to back it up as to why you think it's false.

Because it is false. Most CELs are emission related, but not all are.

88 and later Civics

Code 0 - Faulty ECU (Not emission)

Code 1 - Oxygen Content (Emission)

Code 3 & 5 - Manifold Absolute Pressure (Emission)

Code 4 - Crank Angle Sensor (Ignition/timing)

Code 6 - Coolant Temperature (Not emission)

Code 7 - Throttle Angle (Timing)

Code 8 - TDC position (Ignition/timing)

Code 9 - # 1 cylinder position (Igntion/timing)

Code 10 - Intake air temperature (Emission)

Code 12 - EGR System (Emission)

Code 13 - Atmospheric Pressure (Emission I guess)

Code 14 - Electronic Air Control EACV (Emission)

Code 15 - Ignition output signal (Ignition system)

Code 16 - Fuel injector (Not emission)

Code 17 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (Transmission)

Code 18 - Lock-up solenoid valve (Transmission)

Code 20 - Electric load (Charging system)

Your book tells you they're all emissions, and OBD2 are certainly more emission related than most, but they're not *all* emission codes.

dont mean to thread jack or anything but since the subject has been brought up i've got a quick question... my cousin took the thermostat out of his 97 civic.. it had gotten stuck so he just pulled it out.. he was driving it like that for a while (without the thermostat) and while it had no thermostat the CEL was on.. does that have anything to do with codes and what not?? i dont think it does... does it?

much appreicated. that's all i ask just something to back up your answer. there are a couple of codes you have listed

that aren't talked about and haven't been mentioned and i thank you for bringing that to my attention.

however you say these codes aren't emissions related when they are. once your car goes into closed loop

your ecu is looking at all these sensors and more in your car to make sure it's maintaining the proper a/f ratio.

if your fuel injector isn't functioning properly and you have misfires because of it that is emissions related. your

car isn't running efficiently causing more emissions to exit out of your exhaust pipe. ignition and timing have

alot to do with emissions then you think

Code 6 - Coolant Temperature

Code 7 - Throttle Angle

Code 8 - TDC position

Code 9 - # 1 cylinder position

Code 13 - Atmospheric Pressure

Code 16 - Fuel injector

Code 17 - Vehicle Speed Sensor

pull the code and see what it is...it might be something totally different from the thermostat...
