CleanGSR
THe D90 wouldn't hold a candle to your D300 and shouldn't even be used in the same sentence. If anything, you should have held out and saved up for a D700. Honestly, I can actually see a good reason for the D90, but really only one (maybe two) good reasons. The main reason would be for a photojournalist. It would obviously be handy to have both units in one for that type of job. The second would be the same people who buy a DSLR and leave it in Auto mode as a glorified Point and Shoot....they'll buy it just because it's neat. I'd hate to see what that video does to the shutter/sensor life on the D90, but I'd expect it to degrade it hugely if using the video much. I shoot about 10,000 photos a year (average in the past year). If I decide to get into portrait photography, which I'm seriously considering, I'd expect that number to nearly double. Now....the D90 from what I understand locks the shutter open during video playback for up to 5 minutes. I can't imagine this being good for the longevity of the shutter/sensor. Personally, I'd take a D300 (used) over a new D90 any day of the week.....I'm not sure but what I wouldn't even rather a used D200 over the D90 but that would would be close for the sole reason of CCD vs. CMOS....I'd have to see the high ISO performance of the D90 to decide. Oh and moving to a CMOS sensor from CCD should help improve the noise, but I doubt it will be anywhere as good as a D300....I could be wrong though. CleanGSR
Okay, I found a pretty cool video of the D90 testing by a pro photographer and his crew. Seeing this video really makes me want to consider one ....maybe. The high ISO seems to be on par with the D300 as they use pretty much the same sensor. The metering system in the D300 is much better though, but that's not a huge deal. The biggest deal breaker for me is the highest flash sync speed is 1/200th. I'm so used to 1/500th which I use ALOT, that it will be hard for me to even adjust to the 1/250th of most other cameras.......I honestly don't know if I could live with 1/200th. Oops..forgot the video...here's the video.

Kegger
Meh, if I want to shoot video, I'm gonna get a dedicated video camera. I'll keep my cameras SLRs....
CleanGSR
I can see many reason's why I would like to have one the main being a D300 sensor for a grand. The only question that remains is whether it inherits the crappy metering system from the D80 or gets one closer to the D300. A lot of people hate the D80's metering and say it horribly overexposes. Many say they run up to -1.7 EV comp to get it right. It has been said that some changes have been made to the metering but it's unclear as to whether it means the scenes and crap or the actual 3d Matrix metering that was updated. If the metering looks good/better than the D80 by a good bit then I've already got my wife talked into letting me sell the D70s and getting a D90 when the tax money comes in this coming year. I would really like to have the high ISO performance of the D300 but being able to drop 1800 on a camera body is a good 2 years away. We'll see....I'm not getting my hopes up and Nancy.....I wouldn't preorder one yet if I was you. Looks like a winner but until some things are figured out about the metering and the true performance of high ISO, I'd hold off personally. CleanGSR
Honestly......the D90 would probably be a great secondary, but I would just wait to see how the things above turn out. If you had to have a secondary right now I'd say another D300. Pick one up that's used and you can probably get in "body only" for 1200 and that's not much more than the D90. I'd honestly wait though because if the Metering system and ISO ends up being great then the D90 would make a great backup plus I think you'd probably use the video feature pretty often with Brandon. If you choose to wait to find out the true/real world performance of the D90 (which is what I'd recommend) then you probably won't be waiting that long. It comes out in a couple of weeks and it won't take people more than a week to have high ISO shots on the web and for people to be able to test out the "new" metering system. The thing that has a bunch of people leary about the metering system is ...... if you go look at the sample pictures on Nikon's website, all of the pictures with hard exposures (outdoors with bright skies) were shot in full manual which doesn't show how the meter works. Best to wait I think and get some unbias opinions off the forums. Are you on nikoncafe.com? If not you should really join. Awesome forum and there are quite a few threads discussing the D90 and all the things I've mentioned....and more.
sup
Video on an SLR sounds good in theory because of the awesome DOF and being waaaay cheaper than a 35mm adapter for a real video camera, but I'm gonna predict this just won't work out practically. First, no AF. If you're shooting a moving subject (when are you not?) you'll have to manually focus on the fly. Since the mirror flips up for live view, you can only view the image on the LCD. You'll have to hold the camera and lens with one hand out in front of you(using the other hand to focus). Because of the narrow DOF of most camera lenses on an SLR, along with what I mentioned above, most of what will be filmed will more than likely be out of focus. Yeah professional videographers manually focus and use narrow DOF creatively, but: -They don't do it with an SLR -Not all of us are professional videographers Just sounds like a marketing gimmick right now IMO.
