Nancy
so i have this friend at work selling his 40d, along with like 3 L-series lenses, battery grip, 2 pocket wizards, bogen tripod, and a lowpro backpack. all he wants is $4000, i think thats a really good deal. he said he'll sell all that to me for $2000 if i used my d300, grip and sb-800 as a trade. i was looking online to see which people prefer and most were leaning towards the d300 because of something like it being a entry level professional camera whereas the 40d is more of a prosumer camera. so... what do you think? Kegger
The 40D in all respects is a great camera, it's a crop sensor but it's CMOS. It does use the same processor as the MKIII though. But depending on the glass and other stuffs, I probably wouldn't give up the D300. The fact that the D300 has so much better noise control via the sensor all the way up to 3200 is the seller for me. The 40D does an okay job at 1600 compared to the D300 at 3200 is mindblowing. Even with NC off it's still insanely better. Keep the D300 and build up a good glass collection and you'll be set til the shutter gives out. Which by the way both are rated at 150,000... sup
Tough choice. The D300 is a solid camera, many wouldn't trade for a 40D. However, the reason why I stick with Canon because of the lenses. Nikon doesn't really have any comparable constant f/4 zooms (17-40 f/4L, 24-105 f/4L IS, 70-200 f/4L), Canon has a better lineup of prime lenses, and Canon's lenses over 200mm are much more affordable than Nikon's. It would help if you knew exactly which lenses the guy is selling with the camera. If you want to switch ton Canon though, I'd wait for the 50D. Native ISO 100-3200 (6400, 12800 expandable), 15.1mp, Digic IV processor (brand new), 920,000 pixel 3" screen, AF fine tuning, and more good stuff. The new 5D is supposed to come out soon too, but nobody knows any specs. If you do end up buying the 40D, I'd sell it and buy the 50D as soon as it's released. Official press release is on the 26th, we should find out more then.

It's the main reason that the high ISO performance is so much better than the D200. Personally Nancy I'd stick with the D300 and spend that 2,000 toward a couple of nice pieces of pro glass....17-55 f2.8 is the first that comes to mind.
