Tranny Rattle at High RPMS?

Recommended Posts

So for awhile now I've had a little "problem". If I drive to redline, from about 7000-8000 rpms I get a rattle coming from my shifter area. It's hard to explain but it sounds like my shift knob is rattling (but it's not.....I even removed it to see). It only does it at the really high RPMS. Also, I'll sometimes get a rattle if I let off the gas completely while cruising on the highway speeds. It will have a similar (but much quiter) "rattle" sound and it goes away if I pull it out of gear and coast in neutral.

Tranny shifts smooth and perfect, no grinds whatsoever so I'm not sure what the problem is. There are no functional probelms with the tranny at all, just this irritating rattling sound.

Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe the shifter bushings are worn but haven't checked. It's so hard to jack my car up and get underneath I've been a little lazy. Just thought I'd see if this is a red flag of any type.

Are you sure its the tranny and not something simple such as part of the exhaust?

(without actually hearing it, i coudnt honestly give you an opinion, but im just throwing ideas out there)

+1

I think I have the same problem because honestly, it didn't start until I hit some hard bumps on my way back from the meet.

And I only really hear it when it's raining.

I'm getting my appraisal done tomorrow so I'm gonna check it out afterwards.

Positive. When it's "rattling" I can move my shifter around (not out of gear, but move slightly while in gear...left to right) and it changes the sound/intensity of the rattle. I guess It could be possible that the shift linkage is hitting the exhaust, but I got under there yesterday and their is plenty of clearance between the exhaust and the linkage. Also the shift bushings looked fine.

Problem seems to be fixed. I drained all the tranny fluid and filled it back up with 2.3 quarts of WD-40. All rattles and squeaks seem to be gone. Yay!!!

Seriously though....... I took the shifter bolt out where the shifter bolts to the linkage (under the car) and there was a rubber o-ring thingie that was coming apart. So I took all the bushings out and sprayed it all with WD-40 and put it back together. I also put the torn o-ring thingie back in as best as it would go. The rattle is gone during high RPM's but the shifter is really tight now into each gear. I don't know if I put the bushings back in backward or if I tightened things down a little too snug, but hopefully it will loosen up a little.

There's still a rattle when I let off the gas while in gear (coasting in gear) but removing the shift knob made it go away so I'll be ordering a new shift knob tomorrow. A piece broke off my shift knob about a week ago so that's probably why it's ratttling now.

Yeah, I"m just glad that it doesn't seem to be the mainshaft bearing. Price I was quoted was $450 for replacement and the part only costs $50....so $400 in labor. They do have to pull the tranny though and maybe even take the guts apart......oh well, hopefully it doesn't return.

$290 to replace the ISB/seal including pulling and installing the trans. That also gets you some goody work inside the trans. Guts do have to come out. 105k you should be getting close to needing it if it hasn't been replaced previously.

Does that $290 include the parts? Problem is by the time I spend money on a trip to TN, I'll have more than $450 in it. Thanks for the reply though....tells me I should at least shop around for a better price.

Edit: Anyway, hopefully it's okay for now as the rattle went away after adjusting the shifter.

Yeah, same thing as Joe's reaction. As soon as I read this post I knew that the problem was gonna be exactly what it was since the same thing happened to me when I put in my short shifter and didn't properly put on those o-rings. Honestly, you should have one on either side at the base of the shifter, I'm pretty sure. At least, that's how it is on my car. I used mad synthetic lube on them to quiet them down and avoided taking anything apart in the way of bushings since that's a pain.

Yeah....I"m actually going to go to Lowes this weekend (if I have time...busy weekend) and try to find some rubber grommets/o-rings that I can use on each side. The one that was on one side was torn pretty bad and the other side didn't have one.....Surely I can find something at the hardware section to make work.

Thanks, but I found rubber washers at Lowes that are identical to the one that was coming apart so I picked it up and installed it.....works great. The problem is still gone, so I'm pretty sure that the mainshaft bearing/ISB is fine for now.

Oh...and the rubber washer is one that came with the DC Sports Short Shifter so it wasn't OEM....wouldn't know where to have ordered another one....

I was driving around last night and noticed that I hadn't exactly fixed the problem on my car (guess I take it up to 6000 rpms that rarely) so it wouldn't be a bad thing to pick up some new stuff like you did. Where did you look in Lowes for stuff like that? Is there a rubber o-ring section?

At Lowes go to the section that has the large pullout drawers full of nuts/bolts/washers, etc.... (know where I'm talking about?) look at the top where it lists the items in each section and you'll find rubber washers...then just find the correct drawer and the size you need. It was 97 cents for 2 of them. You don't want rubber o-rings since they are much thicker and won't fit where you need them.

Ah okay. Haha, yeah I don't go to hardware stores very much so his description was actually necessary, as sad as that is... That's a good idea to use the rubber washers instead of o-rings. My shifter came with o-rings but I couldn't fit them in and ended up just using mad lube (which is apparently now all used up) and the old rubber bits that are mostly gone anyway. Washers would be a much better fit.
