sprtbiker
I have a 94 civic. Yesterday I could hear a metal to metal sound coming from the wheels. I could hear for about 15 sec and it went away. I was driving around 60 mph. It was not loud from inside my car but I had my windows down and went next to some barriers so the sounds was easier to hear. It sounds like multiple rings on a bar hitting each other. Not like the screeching sound you hear when your brakes need to be changed. Same thing happened today for about 10 sec on the highway. When I got to work and pulled into the parking lot as I was making a left turn, I heard it again. I tried to repeat the process to see if it would repeat itself but nothing. There is no resistance or anything unusual while braking or turning. Anyone know what it could be?
mpearce1974
I know you said its not the sound you hear when brakes are worn down.......but how are the pads? Mine does same thing and I am just waiting to get money together to buy rotors and pads!
jerrodh
I had the same problem (least I believe) on my sol, it was my caliper ftl. Always happened at low speeds while turning for me.

sprtbiker
Initially I was thinking brake pads but I hear the sound when I am not braking. That's why it doesnt sound like the brake pads.
Tubbith
Just cuz your not breaking doesnt means the pads arent sticking.. it could also be the dust shield(think your car has one). they bend very easily and if its rubbin up against anything that is moving your going to hear it.. Ben.
With my old Integra, the actual brake pad (albeit BRAND NEW) was LOOSE inside of the caliper where it sat, you could hear it clattering and grinding for the most part, during driving. Not so much at high speeds, but definitely at lower vehicle speeds. Never really figured out what to do with it.
hondakid360
Well, I know this is a different kind of car, but my moms 1993 infinity J30 had the same problem from what it sounds like. Her rotors were shot and then made a noise at slower speed. She had them replaced and now they dont make no noise.
Tubbith
All i can really tell you is to get in there and look around. Try to find anything worn or lose..
sprtbiker
I had not heard that sound in a while so I didn't post. I heard it yesterday. Does sound like metal on metal. Sounds like it is coming from the left side. I am assuming it something to do with the wheels. It was a sounds that stayed constants for about 1 mile. I braked a few times but the sounds stayed constant. Eventually I slowed down to a stop and the sound went away. It leads me to believe it is not the brake pads. I guess it could be the calipers or how about the cv joint?
CleanGSR
Is it a screetching type of metal on metal sound? I had that once and the heat shield had gotten pushed against the rotor slightly. Bending the heat shield away from the rotor fixed it. I believe I've also gotten a rock stuck between the heat shield and rotor which had the same effect...That's a couple of things for you to check. The things confuses me is that i only hear is very occasionally. I plan to rotate me tires soon so I will check out further. Thanks for all the input. compuvision02
Heat shield, but since we don't know the exact sound, could be a wheel bearing?
sprtbiker
Heat shield, but since we don't know the exact sound, could be a wheel bearing? What does it sound like when it is the wheel bearing? Wheel bearing sounds serious but I don't know how serious...pardon my ignorance. What is involved when changing them out? I googled "how to change wheel bearing" and it was the first result found. There were several other websites with similar "how-to's". I would advise checking a few of them out and comparing information.
