Run a wire from your battery to your lighter?

Wrong, he will cook the insulation off the wire. He needs to run a wire from his batter to an in-line fuse and then to the lighter.

The wire can be found at Radio Shack along with the inline fuse holder and fuse.

Edit: you will need a standard 15A automotive fuse, and I would isolate the current lighter pigtail from the rest of the circuit so that your radio and DLC are not damaged by stray current. Do not do this at the relay as your radio is on the same circuit.

in other words i wouldn't do it at all IMO

I agree, maybe not for the same reason. I do not believe drawing current from the battery with the car off is good for the "health" of the battery. I fear you will come back to a car that will not start more often than not.

Consider that there is likely a really good reason the lighter circuit was designed to not work without the alternator supplying voltage.

Must be a different story for other vehicles.

I know cigarette lighter adapters in my F150, my GMC Sierra work truck AND the Dodge Ram 2500 and Dodge Sprinter ALL kept a battery charger powered and would cut off when the battery was fully charged, regardless of whether or not the vehicle was on.

For our Accords (96-97), the combination switch (when in the ACC position) powers both the radio, and cigarette lighter, via a relay that is bolted to the bracing behind the front consol, its on the right hand side.

The key must be in (ACC) position to supply voltage to both radio and cigarette lighter, much to the dismay of the OP and respondants with other vehicles that have been designed with the occasional vehicle-off cigarette lighter charger in mind.

Every Honda I've ever owned has had the same "feature". They probably saved plenty of people from a dead battery by doing it as well. Just like you can't lock the driver's door while the door is open. I don't know any other manufacturer that is like that.
