No more HO HO HOs

SYDNEY (AFP) - Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho" greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was reported Thursday.

Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.

One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US slang term for prostitute.

"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free 2B Kids.

"We are talking about little kids who do not understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.

"Leave Santa alone."

A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of the individual Santa himself.

bloody hell, that is so lame, like any women are gonna call it offensive, if any woman is that dried up, politically correct, and cynical, then she should really get out more. you cant have santa saying Ha Ha Ha, thats just wrong, kids arent gonna know what HoHoHo means, and if they do then the parents are the ones to blame, and should be ashamed for their kids knowing what prostitutes are...

When was the last time your saw a kid frightened from a santa saying ho ho ho? these people need a life, badly. I just hate it when people are that picky and spend their time correcting everybody else.

If the kid already knows what a ho is then no harm done in the first place.

If the only context the kid knows to use that word is associated with santa, then he/she can't possibly use 'ho' in a deroggatory manner.

However, if Santa were to go around saying "she's a hohoho", then the kid would know to use the word to refer to women. But that's not what Santa says.

Not too long ago, there was an issue about the NFL team "redskins" (washington) that had a lawsuit against them for using that term for their team name.

Last season, nativity scenes were offensive in some neighborhoods b/c it portrays christianity or something? Also Wal-mart and a few other stores were not allowed to use the word CHRIST in any wishings - "We wish you a merry CHRISTmas" but instead we wish you a merry holiday or seasons greeting. oh wait! holiday came from the root word HOLY. omg run
