2000 Accord 4cylinder transmission issues

Hi, I've been a reader for a while and first time poster on this forum.

I am a long time Civic owner. I just had the car stolen and i am looking into getting an accord. So far i like the 2000 - 2001 4 cylinder models but i read that the 99 - 02 accords had transmission problems, but it seems that the most complaints come from people with v6 engines. (including the search i did on these forums.) Does anyone have any advice on this issue ? Are they exclusive to v6 engines or are the straight 4 engines less popular so i hear less about them.

I have found a few Accords that i like but when i did some research on them i found this little tranny issue and wanted to ask you guys. Thanks for any help in advance

that is very good to know about the tranny, i assume tbk is truth be known ??

even though it is a different tranny any known problems that carried over or was it just the v6 model

Thanks for the quick reply

Major tranny issues were primarily the v6, although 4-bangers with auto's and 100,000 miles+ wouldn't be terribly unusual to find a transmission slipping. Its much less common, later in life problems with the 4-cyl. transmission in other words.

Honda had all kinds of problems with the transmissions they made for the J-series. It's not just the V6s Accords either, the 6G JDM transmissions were crap too. Read the Japanese TSBs and you will see they had all kinds of problems with the 4-cylinder 6G Accord AWD wagons.

My 5G V6 Accord transmission is getting old, but runs like a champ for 188k miles; it does need a flush.

Yeh this is an old thread, but what the heck. The auto transmission issues started with not only the 98 V6 Accords, the problem is far greater. It is the same/similar transmission issue in all the V6's with that base trany. The Odessy caravan, the Pilot, the Acura MDX, the Acura TL, the Acura CL and others. The shifting colinoids clog with poor maintenance, the torque converts sometimes slip, but the play that develops in the main bearing is one of the biggest problems. The dealer has prettey much figured out the fix for rebuilding them though. The 97 was a completely different creature.

That is completely different than the V6. I work on these things for a living. An 01 Accord with a bad trany would typically be caused by on of the following: It was the 1 in 100,000 that was destin to be bad, the fluids were not change regularly (every 30K) with Honda ATF, or the car has been driven hard and beaten on (this is more then often the case). If you want to beat on any Honda, you best get yourself a manual. Just as they make one of the best 4cyl engines on the market, they also make one of the best manual tranies. The V6 is a totaly different creature, and the problem that goes along with it is too. Did Honda extend your trany warranty to 100K as they did the V6 autos? I have had V6 auto's come in that were properly maintenanced, fluid was clean without that typical BAD transmission smell vaproizing from the fluid, but there is still flare-up in the transmission. Apple vs. orange.

When people talk about the problem with the V6 trany issue, they are talking about a chronic problem that Honda is well aware of. When there is a problem with their other tranies, it is probably because of what I mentioned above.

yup my 01 accord had transmission problems. oftentimes the malfunction indicator lamp would light up and my rpm needle would increase. i was lucky because i found the honda warranty in my glove compartment and honda put in a rebuilt tranny, which is good through 09.
