Kenneth2816
I have a 94 Honds Civic DX with V Tec engine. Timing belt broke at about 65 mph. Mechanic put on a new belt, then called me and said it needed a new distributor. He said none of the valves looked like they got bent. Took it home, and it ran really rough. I pulled plug wires while engine running and only ONE cylinder did not cause a bog down. I replaced the plug on that cylinder. It changed nothing. Replaced the wire, still does not affect anything when I pull plug wire from plug while engine running. Engine has no noticeable ticks or pings.... Think maybe the mechanic knew more than he said and just did what work he could.
Hatch92
so it's running on 3 cylinders? also the 94 Civic DX doesn't have a vtec motor unless it was swapped in.
..SSR..
You can't break a belt on not bend a valve. You'll need a new valve(s) and a valve job. Maybe a new valve guide(s) as well.
Pyrorocketeer
would you wanna bet on that? I've seen it done, twice now.
TS John
But out of how many times? More than likely SSR is right and the mechanic just didn't notice a bend or something. I'd work on replacing thems.
Pyrorocketeer
the chances of it, are slim to none. but it is possible compression check the cylinder to see if the valves are seating. did you even replace the distributor like the mechanic said? Kegger
I've snapped two timing belts on two Hondas and never jacked my valves up...
Ben.
I've snapped two timing belts on two Hondas and never jacked my valves up... mad skillz.
VitalSpeed_CRX
Have the mechanic do a compression test infront of you. My timing belt skipped on me about 3 weeks ago ..motor. gone..But there are some motors out there that wont bend your valves if the timing belt jumps im not sure what if one brakes. Kegger
Why would you have a mechanic do it, charge you for labor and get the same results that you would doing it yourself?
cranny
its not impossible , thats for sure. i dont understand why you needed a new distributor though. sounds like some kind of scam to me.
Kenneth2816
yes it runs on 3 cylinders, which I don't understand. The mechanic put the new distriubtor in himself, probably trying to "diagnose" why it didnt run right. Again, he said he looked and didnt see any valve problems. But I am guessing there has to be on that one cylinder. I don't do any engine work at all. I guess I could buy a cheap compression gauge though. if I have to go into the motor, what kind of cost do ya think I am looking at? I got charged 450 bucks so far. ..SSR..
Tell him he has to take the head off to check the valves...
cranny
take the head off to check the valves? what do you mean. leakdown test perhaps? lol. even a compression check would work fine given he knows what happened , just needs to know if he bent any valves enough to not provide a seal. first of all , go back to where you took it , tell him you want your old distributor back. if he doesnt have it , tell him he owes you one. cause i have no idea why he would charge you for that and change it , when you broke a timing belt. except to scam you cause you dont know better.
