Fading CF parts

Recommended Posts

I know a lot of people that have owned carbon fiber products for a while and it seems that they start to get cancer spots and fade over time. At first, I thought it was due to the brand you buy, but I have personally seen c-wings, e-bay crap, and even VIS start to fade after only a couple of years.

I just replaced my hood with Seibon, so I hope this one holds up. I was thinking about taking my CF to a body shop to see if they can shoot a few coats of clear on to protect it from UV and heat damage. Has anyone else done this or known someone who has?

Yeah dude just sand it down with a fine paper, not all the way down just a little. Shoot a couple coats of clear on it, then wet sand.

It fades because of the gel coating thats on them.

BTW what did you do with the other hood?

kinda curious as to why they don't shoot clear on them from the factory...... the companies have to know that the resin is UV sensitive, and gets discolored and stuff.....

humm.... prolly just another cost that companies can eliminate i'd imagine.

Fa sho. I used to think VIS was top notch until my buddies starting getting cancer spots. I went with Seibon and I don't want to end up buying another hood so I will get them craps clear coated and color sanded. Thanks for the info much appreciated.

you can just wetsand them and clear them yourself.

its not that hard.

yeah, but the supplies can be pricey..... aka gun, masks, price of paint, prep materials, finish materials.....

thats easily $500 depending on the type of gun you get. you need a decent gun to be able to break up the clear well.

Yeah, my hood did that. Faded really bad and I thought it was beyond repair. I dropped it off at the body shop and he sanded out all the bad spots and shot a few coats of clear over it. Looks better than when I bought it now, much easier to maintain and I'll never have to worry about it again.
