Stackmoney Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Im trying to change the steering will in my 97 civiv HB. What do i have to do to take there steering wheel off, and not have the air bag diploy ? Please help
TS John Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Airbags deploy on a 12 volt charge I believe. I guess if you disconnect the battery that's a start. When you swap on a new steering wheel it's not gonna have the airbag, right? So what's the big deal if it deploys? You just don't wanna deal with cleaning up or you wanna sell your old wheel? You could just blow it with a 12 volt charge and then get to work but I'm sure there's a better way.
CleanGSR Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 The big deal is.....do you know how bad it hurt, if you were working close to the steering wheel trying to remove it and the airbag deployed. Could possibly even break his neck. Disconecting the battery should do the trick....you could also pull the fuse for the airbag to be extra safe, but the battery should be enough.
cranny Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 you disconnect battery and wait 10 minutes. you must wait 10 minutes. no fuses neeed be pulled. now , take side plastic cover off wheel , take screws out. unplug the harness. pull center of wheel off. now take center bolt holding wheel on , and with a hand at 3 o clock , and a hand at 9 o clock , pull hard , if it doesnt come off easy , you may need a puller. is this an aftermarket wheel?
hollyadoll Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Remove the airbag..Once you take the plastic covers off which are around the shaft of the sheel you will see two brackets on either side of the wheel which are held on by one bolt on each side remove these bolts and the airbag will come off of the front of the wheel then remove the wheel. If you need a new airbag they can be cheap on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251233936658?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
