Im thinking that its fixable. i've been looking at parts online but one of the things im worried about are the fact that the airbags are deployed. where do i get them.... how much do they cost? i dont have full coverage on my car so im on my own to fix it. Smash your face on the steering wheel.

You won't need balls then, you will need a new head.

So there was no life before airbags???

Well, so many people on this forum think that if you remove your airbag that you're garunteed a horrible death. It's hard to tell when someone's kidding sometimes.

Posted

Well the fact is, you can probably kill yourself just as easy with an airbag.

Most people do not wear seatbelts or sit the suggested distance away from the steering wheel.

Only problem is some insurance companies might give you grief if the bags of air are not professionally replaced.

Otherwise, piss on it. The bags just make for a heavier, bulkier wheel.

If I end up still having the teg when my child can ride in the front seat, then I'll pull my passenger airbag and put the JDM Tray in instead.

got pics of that?

It's only illegal if you remove them. IF they were deployed and you didn't replace them I don't think that is illegal unless your car was noted as a salvage vehicle and had to have an inspection to be registered.

Technically it's illegal to remove the airbags. I've never heard of anyone getting ticketed for that though.

whats illegal about it? if you sell it, and don't tell the new owner that it doesn't have airbags, then its illegal.

What's illegal? Um.....the fact that there is a law against it. I'm not sure what kind of question that is. I don't write the laws, just passing on info that this is a law. Removing safety devices from a vehicle is against the law. Removing your seatbelts would be the same deal....against the law. Not saying I give a crap, just letting people know.

It just is. All automobiles after 94 (I think, maybe it was 95) must come with airbags to be legal for sale or resale in the us. If you purposefully tamper with them it is illegal. Thats why there was such a stink about the passenger airbags and people disabling them for their kids, because by the letter of the law it was illegal. BTW, that has since been changed and now they either have a switch or a weight sensor for the pass side.

Anyway. If the bags were deployed and the title is clean (or if it is salvage and your state doesn't require an inspection to be re-registered) then you can just leave them and cut off the bag part, or replace the wheel with one with no bags. You'll have a rough time selling it unless the buyer doesn't care about the bags though.

Ohio Revised Code:

[§ 4513.26.3] § 4513.263. Occupant restraining devices.

(B) No person shall do any of the following:

(1) Operate an automobile on any street or highway unless that person is wearing all of the available elements of a properly adjusted occupant restraining device, or operate a school bus that has an occupant restraining device installed for use in its operator's seat unless that person is wearing all of the available elements of the device, as properly adjusted;

(2) Operate an automobile on any street or highway unless each passenger in the automobile who is subject to the requirement set forth in division (B)(3) of this section is wearing all of the available elements of a properly adjusted occupant restraining device;

(3) Occupy, as a passenger, a seating position on the front seat of an automobile being operated on any street or highway unless that person is wearing all of the available elements of a properly adjusted occupant restraining device;

It goes on from there, but the most important point is that of "available" i.e. you are not required to wear your seatbelt in your 1945 sedan (they didn't exist), your lawn tractor doesn have to have air bags, and your cars airbags have been previously deployed so as to no longer be "available".

By the way...My SRS light is illuminated on the dash whenever the car is on. The bags have never been deployed or tampered with. Any idea where to start tracking down the problem?

Posted

Possibly a short or a sensor. I have heard that it is a good idea to disconnect the airbag system prior to tinkering with it so as to not accidently set it off while working on it. Anyone care to back me up on that or am I totally wrong?
