car quits when tach goes crazy?

This is my first post. I did a "search" prior, but found nothing related. 92 Accord LX 4 door automatic, daughters car. Runs fine unless you tromp down on the throttle entering a freeway. At approx 4000 rpm the car bogs for a second, then the tach jumps all over the dial and the car feels like it looses a cylinder firing, slight jerk felt thru the throttle. Usually backing off the gas bringing it back to 3000 rpm clears it up, but last night after 45 min. of 75 mph driving upon passing a truck it started missing lost power tach went crazy and the car quit? Threw it into neutral and restarted for about 5 miles, then did it again. Pulled off the freeway and it just cranked evenly, no start. After looking at wiring harness plugs by the distributor it restarted? I'm thinking igniter? coil or whole distributor because of the erratic tach. Anybody have a clue? Thanks for any assistance. Bill

ok so i might get flamed for admitting this but I have a pos ford escort that does kind of the same thing. it feels like one of the cylinders isn't firing esp if i'm trying to gun it, this is pretty much the whole reason i bought my prelude, but I couldn't figure anything out so far, mostly cuz i dont give enough of a crap to do anything to that car, but I changed all the plug wires and plugs and it still does the same thing. It doesn't have a dizzy but it has two coil packs with carbon buttons inside and those where fine + it only feels like it is missing one cylinder and if it was my coil packs it would feel like two of them where not working thus shutting off the engine every other stroke. Oh crap, I'm rambling and I cant help. sorry I'll stop now.

P.S. my tac didn't do that either. It kinda sounds like something might be wrong with ur dizzy esp if the car actually dies once it starts doing that. but IDK maybe I'm talking out my a$$. I'm sure someone else around here can help and ur a cool guy for using the search button first. u should stick around for a while. welcome to HF.

CAR IS FIXED! ITRgirl nailed it. Found that the negative battery cable was loose where it attaches to the engine and the aftermarket clamp on the battery post corroded and loose as well. It feels like another 20 HP has been added! Tach now goes to 6000 rpm under full throttle then it up shifts. Thanks very much and have a great new year!
