My car got hit.......

Well, I'm just sick about it. While out on a service call with another tech, my car was hit by a hit and run. Luckily a lady saw it happen and got the license plate number and description of the person driving and filed a police report. I talked with the cop that took the report and she was going to try and find the guy tonight and finish up the police report sometime Thursday (she has the next 2 days off work). So, hopefully they find the guy, give him the ticket and finish the report. I should be able to get his insurance info off the report and file a claim with his company (hopefully he has insurance).

If he doesn't have insurance, I'll probably just buff the rust transfer off and live with the golfball size dent in the bumper. It looks like his exhaust hit me. Here's a pic. Drives me nuts since my car is otherwise in basically perfect condition.

Nah.....that's not the kind of person I am. As long as I get it fixed I'll be happy. If he doesn't have insurance, then I garuntee he won't be able to afford to pay me even if I win small claims court. Sadly, just because they lose in small claims court doesn't mean they have to pay (there' s no consequences if they don't). I just hope it all works out and I can get my car back to normal.

wow man, that really sucks. hope everything works out for you with this guy. luckily that lady got the plates.

when i was workin at the body shop, this old lady came in to get a quote, she backed into her house. on her way out, she backed into the body shop owners truck, then took off. he dropped the old C bomb when he saw that.

Update

The body shop quoted me 294.77 to fix it. He said he'll take the bumper off and use an infra-red heat to heat the area and stretch it back to form. He said he will use very little (if any) body filler, and if he does have to use filler it will be a urethane filler and bond to my bumper like factory. Then he'll have to spray and blend the area and reclear the whole bumper. I thought that sounded like a fair price for the repairs.

The guy that hit me thought it sounded high and wanted me to get another estimate at a place he picked out. I told him "no, I don't let just anybody touch my car, and the body shop I got the quote from I've used before and trust their work". I also told him everything they would have to do. He tried a few times to get me to get a second estimate and I flat refused....he finally agreed that he'd just have to pay the amount.

I've also found out that he does have insurance (from the police dept.) but the police report won't be available until Friday morning. Once I get the report with his info, I'll call him and request my money. If he can't get it to me that day, I'll tell him not to worry about it and just get it from his insurance company.

Yeah, cops are already giving him a ticket for that. He wants to pay me straight out though. I'm giving him the chance to do that since it will get my car fixed faster, but if he doesn't come through by the first of next week, I'll just turn it into his insurance.

  • 1 month later...

No, not yet. I need to call his insurance and see what the latest is. To the other guy......it only takes about 2-3 seconds to look at somebody's plate, so he didn't need to "hang" around.

Story goes......the guy was the former owner of Aussie Jack's restaruant. His insurance was Allied for the company (and his company truck). There's some confusion between his insurance and him on whether or not his truck was still covered since he sold his business. I need to call and find out the latest, but I"m kind of scared of bad news so haven't called yet.

Man.... I know what it's like to be in limbo with insurance. Geico/Allstate kept me in the dark for a month about my accident. So I called and bugged them to get it done and call the witness every few days.

Best of luck with getting it fixed. Drive a hard bargain, man.

damn dude im sorry.

sue the guy for what he did. you can get his insurance claim and then at least 5k in small claims for all the trouble he put you through.

That is one of the sadest comments I have heard in a while. 5K because of an accident?! *sigh* Yea the guy was a jerk for driving off but thats a bit excessive.

I feel your pain. I bought a new '00 EX in the spring of 2000 and I had the car for 9 days and someone smacked it in the parking lot. Hit it so hard it moved sideways a whole parking space. Car had less then 200 miles on it and already a $5000 claim on the ins. There were hundreds of people in the parking lot, yet not one person called the police or said they saw the incident.

Worked out in my favor though. One week later, the day before it went to the shop to get fixed it was run into again on the same side (now just over 300 miles on the car). Her insurance inspected the car and cut me a $4500 check too! I still hadn't even cashed the first check yet. I called my agent and he said since it was two separate incidents and the second one was filed by the old lady and not me that there was no imporpriety and cash both checks! w00t!

I assume you spent those checks on bodywork and got everything fixed?

I got everything fixed and had an extra $4500 in the bank.

This car was traded in a year later for my wifes accord. The company that did the work was horrible. Had to take it back three more times for significant re-repairs and it was starting to rust through the paint where it was repaired within 9 months. Almost like they painted bare metal and didn't prime it Entire pass side was replaced. New front and rear bumper, front fender, door and they cut and replaced the rear quarter. Entire job looked like they had the tech school dropout do the work.

Hung, be glad it was just an exhaust pipe. And it's a good thing you found a shop that you like so you don't have to go through this mess.
