cranny
heres a step by step for putting a timing belt on 97-01 style accords. and really there all pretty much the same : 1)jack car up in front and take off drivers wheel , place jackstand under subframe sit car on it. 2)theres 3 plastic pop ins(one pop in , 2 phillips head) that come out to release inner well plastic.pull the plastic down , tuck it under LCA out of the way. 3)your gonna need the hex tool for holding the crank pully in auto cars for sure , some manuals very tight as well. specially H/F series(180ft/lbs , civic or teg being 130). heres a pic of the hex tool i made myself instead of buying one: 4)place the hex tool in the pully , letting it rest on the ground to stop it. 19mm on 3/4 inch drive ratchet with a couple extentions , going right through the middle of the hex wrench onto pully bolt. your probably gonna need a BFB(big fukin bar) on the ratchet handle for leverage. once pully bolt cracks leave it in for now. 5)now undo the power steering pump from the brackets altogether(2 -12mm bolts) , slip the belt off that and the main pully , sit the pump out of the way. 6)now crack the 12mm bolt on the bottom of the alternator , and the 14mm bolt on the top(long one). than using a 10mm , loosen the 10mm adjuster bolt , this will slacken the alternator off. once you have enough , remove A/C , alternator serpentine belt , might be hard to get right out , but no need sit it aside. 7)now remove the spark plug wires. now you can take the 5 bolts out holding the valve cover. remove the valve cover carefully. try not and disturb the gasket(pull it out of the groove). 8)support engine under oil pan with a block of wood and a jack. now you can remove the drivers side engine mount , 3-17mm bolts holding it to engine. heres a pic of all this done : 9)undo the 10mm bolt holding the dipstick onto head. remove dipstick carefully from the engine. heres a pic with all this done: 10)now undo the 2-10mm bolts one on each side of the upper timing cover , wiggle it out. 11)set the engine with the crank pully bolt , to TDC(cam wheel arrow pointing up , main pully on the TDC mark(single mark by itself). now remove the crank pully bolt. now jiggle the crank pully off the crank. now you can undo the 4 lower 10mm timing cover bolts and remove the lower cover. carefully , lol , the gasket sucks ass. heres the covers off with belts already removed from engine: 12)crack the tensioner bolt(14mm) and loosen it a full turn only. now you can push the tensioner enough to remove the timing belt and balancer belt in this particular case. once you remove balancer belt , pull the cog off the crank , being careful not to lose the keyway. now you can remove the timing belt. install new belt same way , making sure there is no slack between the cam wheel and crank cog , on the front side(with timing marks aligned of course. slip it around the tensioner into place. always making sure you dont turn the cam or crank wheels. once belt is in place , push tensioner to take out the remaining slack on firewall side , than using a 12mm wrench , turn the engine using the camwheel clockwise just an inch. now slide the cog back on , than place balancer belt over the left wheel , the crank cog , than under the tensioner wheel(which moves independantly of the timing belt tensioner wheel) , and push on the balancer belt tensioner while tightening the tensioner bolt(which holds both). if you didnt disturb anything , both belts should be mint and timing marks right on.(civics and tegs dont have balancer belts). heres pic with new belts installed: 13) now you can put the lower timing cover back on(MAKE SURE THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE CKP AND TDC IS IN ITS GROOVE AND NOT CLAMPED BY TIMING COVER) , 4 lower bolts. than you can place crank pully on the crank again , leaving bolt loose for now. than you can place upper cover back on , 2 bolts(do not overtighten cover bolts). than you can put the valver cover back on(do not overtighten these either). than put the engine mount back on. than you can place spark plugs back in holes , snap everything back on. than you can place A/C/alt belt back on the pullys , tighten it with adjuster bolt till belt is tight(1/4 inch deflection). tighten the upper and lower alt. bolts. than you can place dipstick back in engine , fire 10mm bolt in. than place power steering pump in place , place bolt over it anc crank , put bolts back in , and holding up on pump to tighten belt , tighten them. now using your hex wrench again , tighten the crank pully bolt to 180ft/lbs. place plastic well back in place , fire pop ins back in the proper holes. put the wheel back on and let it to ground. you can put a timing light on it and make sure its bang on , engine must be full warm , and ecu code conector crossed. when i put a timing light on this accord when i was finished(this was my dads car , haha) , it was dead on the money. this is almost the same for every sohc honda engine. next time i get a dohc engine to do ill make another one or these.
