turbo_d15b
so i bought an HKS style BOV off of ebay and it looks great...i don't know how a real HKS BOV sounds like...but anyways....when i hit 3,500 RPMs it is not really loud? is this b/c of my turbo set up....( Intake to turbo...and intake filter to the turbo spool ) no intercooler....is this the problem....just not enough air sucking into the intake tube? EH6TunerDaniel
What???? I have no clue what you are asking or what you mean. I wouldnt trust a cheap knockoff BOV with my turbo setup.
mycarsux
Its not a good thing if your BOV is loud. Means its restrictive and not efficient enough for the boost your running. Here's something you should do. Take off your turbo. Learn what a proper turbo setup is and then apply. EDIT: This should help MORE EDIT: I just re-read your post. And at 3,500 you're not at full boost. So its not expected to be loud. And I have a question. Did you just decide one day to buy a turbo kit and bolt it on to your motor? turbo_d15b
no i did not decide to slap on a turbo...i bought the car from chicago with the turbo in it already? the guy did all the internals and what not..

The BOV was designed to be loud, it just becomes louder as more air escapes. There is no problem with releasing the air like that because it actually does release, and does it in a matter of seconds. It's not long enough to cause damage/comp. surge.

I've heard differently and it made sense actually. But if its true, like you say (and I believe you), that they designed BOV's to be loud then yeah I agree with you. Pyrorocketeer
Should just went with a re-circulating one..... much better imho. personally, I hate the noise.

But if its true, like you say (and I believe you), that they designed BOV's to be loud then yeah I agree with you. You're right, and whoever said it was right, that the high pitched noise was coming from the air escaping through a small passage, but there's so much pressure and it releases so quickly that compressor surge isn't a problem. The SSQV, one of the BOV's that do make a high pitched noise, was designed to do so. I think it sounds cool.

Its soooo...cliche, i guess? Like everyone has one. I like recirulating ones like Pyro said. What's the term for that? Atmospheric?
Attaus
No, atmospheric are the BOV's, like the HKS, GReddy, Blitz, TurboXS, etc. Dump/recirculating/bypass like the HKS racing bypass just recycle the air back into the intake.

I know what it means to recirculate but I was just wondering if there was a term for it. I guess those 3 (dump/recirculating/bypass) are.

Just puts the air 2 different places.
Attaus
They're called different things because they do different things goof troop. You can't just make a Tial 50mm a bypass valve. Go back to your corner.

Sure they're both BOV's but one acts a little differently than the other. IMO, you shouldn't call that the same thing since they're different in those features. Kegger
I wouldn't trust the egay BOV anyway. They have a tendency to have a craptty diaphragm and they shred easily when they let off boost or they leak and your stuck with replacing it with a good one.
