Starter

I have been having trouble starting, and got the battery and alternator checked, those were fine. Then the Honda dealership told me there's a dead spot on the starter, so I need a new starter. They will charge $214 for the Honda brand starter, and $380 total with intallation. Autozone said there were 2 possible starters that might fit in my car, and those retail for $90-$99. NOT Honda brand. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do? Oh, and it's an 01 Civic LX.

Thanks.

The Autozone starters are most likely Mitsubishi, which is what Honda uses. Go to Autozone and be done with it.

get the 1 from autozone and take the 10 mins to put it in. the only reason honda charges so much is because it is a name brand so your paying for that name.

Ok, thanks guys. What does it require to replace it as far as tools, etc. Do I need to lift the car? And where is it located?

2 bolts hold it on, and 1 nut for the ground wire ...all you need is a ratchet, standard socket set and extension. I don't remember what size off the top of my head, but i'd guess 12 for the ground and btwn 12 and 17 for the other 2.

The reason Auto Zone told you there were two starters is because there is either a gear reduction starter or a standard starter. The gear reduction starter is a lot smaller than the standad starter but it has just as much torque. Just look at the starter and see which one you have. If it looks to be a regular size starter than it's the non gear redution drive starter. If it's smaller than most normal starters than it's the gear reduction drive. If you don't know what a standard starter size is than you can just pop the hood on any domestic car before about 96 and that's your standard starter size. Also you can take the starter off call your local Honda dealership and speak to the parts counter there. Give them Your VIN and the numbers stamed on the starter assuming it is the OEM. They will be able to tell you exacally what it is.
