0verb00st
i testdrove a honda Insight not too long ago. that car is really cool. when you start it, you cant even tell it's running. the only indication is when the dash lights up. the 5 speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and the throttle response is quick. if i didnt have 2 kids, i would definitely buy one. Drew
I know Trepid looked into getting one because he commutes an hour each way every day and he commutes 2.5 hours each way once a week. Not sure he ever test drove one. But he opted for the Civic instead. I'm sure he'll tell us all about it soon...
Trepid
Yeah I drove it and I liked it... It's power was similar to that of the civic but two things bothered me about it... one was the look of thecar... its not very pretty, and the other was the cost of the batteries, if one goes bad you have to pay 1500 for a new battery, but for what you save on gas its well worth the price. I really liked the feature that if you put it in nuetral the car basically shuts down to save on gas.
0verb00st
the battery is guaranteed for ten years by honda. so even if it dies in 10 years, that'll be $1500 well spent to get a replacement. i think the styling of the insight is a lot like a modern CRX. Trepid
Hmm... when I asked them they said 10 years or 70,000 miles I think but I am not certain about that... I do know that it wasn't a risk that I was willing to make with the long miles I drive(about 1000 a week)
Guest HondaCRX16
I think it looks like a modern CRX also, but the over all body style is not all that great. Rex
Trepid
heh, I asked them about that, those weird tire covers and stuff and they said that they had to design it like that to get the optimal gas mileage... Look at the new civic hybrid, it only gets like 45 mpg with using the civics body style

The underachiever
They may have great fuel economy and they may save you money, but I think any great car needs a pure roaring 100% gasoline piston engine. I think it is essentially the soul of the automobile.
UltraViolet
They are fantastic cars!! 300 patents, the most technologically advanced production car on the planet!! The Insight makes a great eco-car which is great fun, really puts a smile on your face, you can hussle it around the twisties and glance at the fuel computer and giggle when you see even when pressing on, doing over 70mpg !!! It struggles on hills, but apart from that, pretty nippy. (Will do 70mph in 2nd gear!!) In England we pay circa 76p per litre of fuel (well over 3 pounds per gallon - not sure what that is in dollars, but you get the idea!) so high miles make it well worthwhile. As for the batteries - guarentee for 10 years, and Honda haven't had any fail yet (with one test car having covered over 200k miles already!) - then if they do fail, Honda will contribute to the replacement cost anyway. The looks - I thought the same at first, but they grow on you. My ickle 'Bug' is loved and pretty in a quirky way - def. a modern slant on the old CRX !! As for a great car needing 100% gasoline........ Dual Note concept? Perhaps the next generation NSX will change your view - potential over 170mph performance, 0-60mph in under 5 seconds, engine driving rear wheels, battery assist on front...... possible 50mpg !!! UltraViolet
Current NSX is hardly cheap........ I am guessing it will be around the same price, perhaps 5k more. But certainly if you consider the NSX is over 10 years old and still competitive, the brand new one will have to push things forward a lot to make sure it displays the same level of longivity. UltraViolet
THEY SUCK SOME SERIOUS ASS. i mean they are a newer version of the crx but they look gay as hell. i would say take all of them and blow them up Well you are of course entitled to your opinion, but I must say it doesn't seem too well thought out. You would blow them all up because you think "They look gay"???? They are not the "newer version of the CRX" - it is a unique and very new car which has a passing resemblance to the CRX. It is the development test bed that has enabled Honda to develop some seriosly sexy technology that will be used in future cars - eco cars, family cars and serious sports cars. And if you switch off the pre-conceptions and test drive one with an open mind - quirky good fun! As a bonus, if you remotely car about the planet - it is the cleanest everyday usable car on it!!! On the subject of its looks - I wasn't keen on the folded in front arches, or the enclosed rears - but every styling details has been done for aerodynamics - it all has a purpose. I say well done to Honda for having the guts to put a concept car into production - even when every one sold makes a loss for them (they cost almost twice as much to build as Honda sell them for!) 0verb00st
like i said before. i think they look great and are fun to drive. i also like how the insight is nearly silent at idle. anyway, it looks a million times better then the toyota prius (or however it's spelled)
UltraViolet
Civic Hybrid comes out next year - won't be as 'special' as the Insight as it is more conventional - 4 door saloon..... but seats for the family and still gets over 50mpg - uses some of the developements from the Insight, batteries have shrunk, obviously doesn't use the exotic light materials as would be too costly - but will be cheaper to buy than the Insight too. optional187
i musta done gone retarded too, cause i really don't like the way it looks. all the features about it are cool though.
UltraViolet
Not likeing the styling isn't being retarded, it is your opinion - and I agree - I wasn't sure at first - grows on you though. Appreciating it for what it is - that's good. Whether you would want one is totally different - there are lots of cars that I can appreciate - a lot I don't like but I appreciate why others would like them (new Mini for example - I don't like at all, but I wouldn't blow them up as for some people they are great) ....... with the Insight though - many could not live with it's uncompremising all out pursuit of being a full blown Eco-car, I love the technology that has gone into it - and the forward thinking - so I can live with what to some are its shortcomings........ But the good thing about it for us all - is some of the technology developed will filter into the other more mainstream vehicles - and that has got to be good - for the environment and performance!!! A lot of the weight saving has come from new ways of making things - this can be used in performance cars - fitting a large engine compromises a sports car from the weight side of things, but if other components can be made lighter - negates this to an extent!!
