Slapjack Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I was thinking Mobile 1 full syntehitc for my 1999 Civic EX.. The only problem that I see might be the fact that it was previously run with dino oil for 102K miles.. Should I stick with the dino oil or is it sfe to switch? I had a 1996 Dodge Neon ACR before this car and the crankshaft went bad just after 20,000 miles of switching to syn.
cranny Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 i run castrol syntec 5w20 in my civic. LIQUID ENGINEERING , haha. if the car has had conventional oil ran in it its whole life than dont switch stay with conventional. thats my opinion.
JDM_Hamster Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I use Castrol Synthetic Oil... Or if i have enough money after i get my oil changed i go to Autozone and buy a can of engine restore every 3,000 miles($5 a little can of engine restore)
JDM_Hamster Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I use Royal Purple. Hey I've heard of Royal Purple, is it any good?would my car be able to use it? and how much is it a bottle?
SolLesHonda Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Well, any car can use it. They make it in all different weights. I use it, and love it. In fact, I have some sitting down stairs in my garage with a mugen oil filter. I am changing my oil today, now that I think about it. It is $6.48 per quart here in VA, and the Mugen oil filter is $30.00 online.
SolLesHonda Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I will never use Fram oil filters again. My friend had showed me an article about the filter's insides disintegrating and going into the engine, causing all types of problems. I decided from then on, Fram was not for me.
CleanGSR Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I ususally use Bosch filters. Good filter for the money. I put about 2000 miles/month on my car so I can't spend too much on oil changes since I do them so often. I usually go 4000-5000 miles between changes since I run full synthetic.
..SSR.. Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 If you are turbo, don't use Synthetic. Don't use Synthetic if you have forged pistons. I use Supertech 10w-30. 6,000 on this change so far.
CleanGSR Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Why not use synthetic on turbo motors? I thought it was a better lubricant which should be better for turbo apps.
..SSR.. Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I should mention I wouldn't use it on the first couple thousand miles on a built turbo engine. I would use it at all on a built N/A.
SolLesHonda Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I run Synthetic on my turbo'd motor, with forged pistons. No problems yet. :knock on wood:
CleanGSR Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 On this subject......how long should you go between oil changes (time not miles)? My dad only puts about 1000-1500 miles per year on his S2K, so how often should we change the oil in it?

dcletten Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 i use mobil 1 full syn 5w30, extended performance mobil 1 oil filter, this past time i put some of that lucas synthetic oil stabilizer, i normally run about 5k on an oil change, seems to be working fine, car has 155k miles on it, the guy that had it before me ran conventional, and i bought it at 132k havent had a problem since i switched to synthetic, i work at an oil change place and we have a printed article talking about going from syn to conv and back, or vice versa and its supposed to be ok, i just alwasy heard if you have a leak that syn will make it more predominant
DJB98LX Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 i use quaker state full synthetic 5w-30 Quaker State uses a wax based compound. Don't use their regular stuff! Not sure about the Syn. So does Pennzoil and Halvoline. Yuck!! I use Castrol!

My dad only puts about 1000-1500 miles per year on his S2K, so how often should we change the oil in it? Every 3 months when it's being driven, mine sits all winter, I don't even start it between November & April, I change the oil right before I'm gonna take it out in the spring. When it's out in the summer I change every 5k. He may want to consider synthetic since it sits.
