CleanGSR Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I was wondering what kind of Japanese were produced back in the 50's and 60's. Also what year did Japanese cars (Honda specifically) start selling cars in the US? What the the first Honda sold in the US? Are there any cars in Japan that are worth a lot of money in Japan like the American Classics are here in the states? Just wondering some stuff about the history of foreign cars previous to the 70's since I've never heard much about them.
Humphries Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 i think the civic (CVCC) was produced in the mid 70s in the US.
SexyH22 Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 that really doesnt help to answer the question about cars in japan in the 50's or 60's....
SolLesHonda Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 that really doesnt help to answer the question about cars in japan in the 50's or 60's.... Haha, what a jerk. I love it. I have been looking online to figure some of this out, but could find nothing.
BuddySol Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I was wondering what kind of Japanese were produced back in the 50's and 60's. I'm guessing Japanese were produced the same way in the 50's and 60's. HAHAHA... Well, I don't think Honda was producing cars in the 50's...they were mainly doing bikes. Datsun, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Toyota were around tho. Here's a site to check out some of their cars: Toyota Automobile Museum Some important/popular cars/bikes/trucks in Japan over the years. And I believe the first Honda to hit American shores was the N600 in 1970.
Humphries Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 thats just the information that came to mind.. lol
BuddySol Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Here's a N600... Here's the forefather to our beloved S2...the S500 Anyhow, Toyota and Nissan/Datsun prolly made the more "classic" cars, since at the time Honda's business was bikes. But I would guess the S500 is a cult classic - it and the T360 were pretty much the first Honda automobiles.
CleanGSR Posted March 9, 2006 Author Posted March 9, 2006 In that case what was the first honda car ever produced? Also, are there any foreign cars considered classics in japan? For example is there any foreign car in japan that is the equivalent of our 57 Chevy as far as a "classic"?
blackdelsol Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 +1 for '57 chevy. they kick ass. my dad owned, and totaled, 5 '57 chevy's before he went into the navy.
BuddySol Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Honda's first production car? It was the T360...which was a truck (think k-car sized) and then shortly followed by the S500. Not quite sure what would be considered "classics". Most of their designs followed euro-styling and borrowed heavily from foreign automotive technology at that time. Japan's automotive culture was just barely getting started, when the world was ions ahead. I would think most of their classics would be around the 60s-70s, which is the time of the Datsun 510s...I know I'd take one =P
CleanGSR Posted March 9, 2006 Author Posted March 9, 2006 Cool. That answered a lot of my questions. So we'll probably never see a "classic" foreign car sell for 400,000 on barrett jackson?
JDM_Hamster Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I know this is no help but i love the S800 Race Car!!! Ill try and find a picture for you B16 if you wat it?!?
ap1drvr Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 http://www.worldcarfans.com/classics.cfm/country/jcf The Skyline has been around since about 1955. http://history.jbskyline.net/#1stgen You're probably right about the "classic" japanese car never selling for $400k at Barrett-Jackson.

Just wondering some stuff about the history of foreign cars previous to the 70's since I've never heard much about them. the honda s600 came out in 1964. it was the first honda roadster. check out www.hondas600.com if you came up on one of those that would be sweet.
Angelocardoc Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 The S800 Coupe is one sweet ride from the 60's I've been trying to get my hands on one of these micro cars but man are they rare. Some pics Some history here 1969 Honda S-800 Coupe

babykansas04 Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 heres a web site it might help it might not: http://www.hondaclassiccars.co.uk this one was pretty interesting: http://www.hondabeat.com/history.php
Angelocardoc Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 I missed out on a 1968 S-800 coupe on ebay about 8 months ago I think it sold for about $9000 US It looked mint from the pictures.
Nancy Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 I would disagree on the first honda roadster when the S500 was released a year before. yeah, my bad. thanks for the correction.
ricehater86 Posted April 26, 2006 Posted April 26, 2006 In 1957 I believe Toyota sold its first car in the states called the Toyopet or something along those lines
redcoats1976 Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 actually the japanese buy a lot of classic american iron, thats one of the reasons prices have gotten so high.when i was in high school(mid 70s),2 grand would buy a good GTO.and yes there were a lot of big blocks, most wouldnt handle or stop for crap but they would all haul ass...
redcoats1976 Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 BTW google 2000 GT,this was an early japanese sports car
Angelocardoc Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 One of the more famous Jap sports cars is the Datsun "Fairlady" Here is a link with pictures and history. This two seater convertable design is very popular. Honda S600 & S800 Datsun Fairlady 1500,1600, 2000 Fiat Alfa romeo Triumph MG Austin Healy etc etc etc but... I think the first company to come up with this 'closed wheel , 2 seater , convertable' was Jaguar & Porsche in 1949 The Jaguar XK120 and the Porsche 356....All of them are very cool cars
CleanGSR Posted September 12, 2006 Author Posted September 12, 2006 I could be wrong, but aren't about half the cars you listed European and not Japanese? Fiat Alfa romeo Triumph MG Austin Healy Jaguar Porsche None of those are Japanese to my knowledge. The S600 or S800 would be a cool collector car though.
