Japnese Classic Cars

I was wondering what kind of Japanese were produced back in the 50's and 60's. Also what year did Japanese cars (Honda specifically) start selling cars in the US? What the the first Honda sold in the US? Are there any cars in Japan that are worth a lot of money in Japan like the American Classics are here in the states? Just wondering some stuff about the history of foreign cars previous to the 70's since I've never heard much about them.

I'm guessing Japanese were produced the same way in the 50's and 60's. HAHAHA...

Well, I don't think Honda was producing cars in the 50's...they were mainly doing bikes. Datsun, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Toyota were around tho. Here's a site to check out some of their cars:

Some important/popular cars/bikes/trucks in Japan over the years.

And I believe the first Honda to hit American shores was the N600 in 1970.

Here's a N600...

Here's the forefather to our beloved S2...the S500

Anyhow, Toyota and Nissan/Datsun prolly made the more "classic" cars, since at the time Honda's business was bikes. But I would guess the S500 is a cult classic - it and the T360 were pretty much the first Honda automobiles.

In that case what was the first honda car ever produced? Also, are there any foreign cars considered classics in japan? For example is there any foreign car in japan that is the equivalent of our 57 Chevy as far as a "classic"?

+1 for '57 chevy. they kick ass.

my dad owned, and totaled, 5 '57 chevy's before he went into the navy.

Honda's first production car?

It was the T360...which was a truck (think k-car sized) and then shortly followed by the S500.

Not quite sure what would be considered "classics". Most of their designs followed euro-styling and borrowed heavily from foreign automotive technology at that time. Japan's automotive culture was just barely getting started, when the world was ions ahead. I would think most of their classics would be around the 60s-70s, which is the time of the Datsun 510s...I know I'd take one =P

Cool. That answered a lot of my questions. So we'll probably never see a "classic" foreign car sell for 400,000 on barrett jackson?

I would disagree on the first honda roadster when the S500 was released a year before.

One of the more famous Jap sports cars is the Datsun "Fairlady"

Here is a link with pictures and history.

This two seater convertable design is very popular.

Honda S600 & S800

Datsun Fairlady 1500,1600, 2000

Fiat

Alfa romeo

Triumph

MG

Austin Healy

etc etc etc but...

I think the first company to come up with this 'closed wheel , 2 seater , convertable' was Jaguar & Porsche in 1949

The Jaguar XK120 and the Porsche 356....All of them are very cool cars

I could be wrong, but aren't about half the cars you listed European and not Japanese?

Fiat

Alfa romeo

Triumph

MG

Austin Healy

Jaguar

Porsche

None of those are Japanese to my knowledge.

The S600 or S800 would be a cool collector car though.
