DJB98LX Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I wa just reading in another post people talking about their intakes whistling. I had a cheap CAI that whistled like a mofo, but only while driving, and only under a certain load. Light throttle at low RPMs and full throttle at high RPMs sounded like I was running 40 PSI of boost. It was really annoying, and wouldn't do it while parked, which was really gay. I thought it was from the size of the intake being larger than the trottle body, causing a small lip that acted as a whistle, but not sure. My new AEM barely does it!! My question is, does anyone really know what causes this, who's intakes does it, and what brand they are. Thanks!!
dr5tock Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 dunno... bad sleeves maybe or the way it is bent? anyways the problem is fixed you said.... so who cares!
stetypeR Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I've just copyed this from the Blitz website. SONIC POWER AIR FILTER This is the latest design of filter to hit the market and is another ground breaker in terms of concept and design. The filtration element is fixed inside a polished stainless steel heat shield which prevents hot air from the engine bay entering the intake and thus reducing inlet air temperature. Inside the shield sits the cone filter which has a very large base and narrow top giving in an ‘umbrella’ appearance, this clever design allows the maximum possible surface area of the filter element to be exposed to air being sucked into the intake. The height of the heat shield can also be adjusted up to allow more air to the filter element, and down to reduce air flow. Power gains are very good thanks to the ‘umbrella’ design of the filter element and filtration levels are amongst the best in it’s class. Sonic power makes a very distinctive high pitch whistling noise when the engine is revving hard, this sound can be varied slightly by adjusting the height of the heat shield. This is the top of the range of Blitz Filtration systems offering superior airflow, looks and noise.
CleanGSR Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 My dad's AEM makes that sound. My short ram intake doesn't. It just makes a really loud sucking sound.
JDM_Hamster Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I used to have a Intake that hissed all the time... like when i was parked, driving at all rpm's, it would sound like a turbo spooling up, and then when i let off the accelerator it made a loud deep Hiss like i did have boost, the intake brand was Evofuzion, but i got rid of it when i got my short ram air intake.
..SSR.. Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Intakes whistle when air flows over a sharp edge. Stock does it, you just can't hear it.
JDM_Hamster Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 yeah but nobody around here would race me because they thought i had turbo with a misfiring system, because my old exaust shot fire balls when i decellerated...
CleanGSR Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 If that's true, then the louder the whistle the more henderance on the air flow. You obviously don't want the air to hit a sharp edge since that would slow it down.
..SSR.. Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 It doesn't slow it down, it just isn't good for flow.
jdm_ej1_206 Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 mine kinda whistles when im driving.... my friend put it on for me.... he was showing me how... so does that mean that its prollie hooked up wrong? kidna sounds like a turbo spooling up.... sounds like im boostin... not good?
CleanGSR Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 It's probably installed fine, we were just talking about what makes the whistling noise. As SSR said the air is catching on an edge. It's probably happening on the edge of the piping where the filter goes.

CleanGSR Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Well, I'm not sure if there's a way to fix it. All intakes will do it to a point. I guess you could minimize it by using pipe that's got rolled edges but it really won't gain you any power on a n/a setup. I've noticed a lot of piping kits for intercoolers come with the edges bead rolled. Really not necessary for just an intake though.

I just wana be able to fix the car myself and do what I wanna do to it on my own.... I guess it helps when ur dad works on cars for a living....
90IntegraC1 Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 K&N Typhoon's whistle all the time and make a bov sound when you let off the throttle. it's annoying and cool at the same time, hard to explain my true feelings
DJB98LX Posted March 3, 2006 Author Posted March 3, 2006 It's probably installed fine, we were just talking about what makes the whistling noise. As SSR said the air is catching on an edge. It's probably happening on the edge of the piping where the filter goes. I'm pretty sure SSR is right. The first intake I had going it had really a crapty cut on the throttle body side. After using a grinding wheel and a file, I reduced it a lot, but if you look at a lot of intakes tube size compared to throttle body size, the tube is alot bigger, causing a reduction in size at the TB, and a big lip to create turbulance/ whistling. It also helped to move the clamps right to the edge of the cuppler, reducing the chance of lips, but still did it some. A friends ITR doesn't do it, but intake cost lots of $$$, and matches up with TB good!!
JDM_Hamster Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 I didnt care what was making the noise when i had my old intake, i just loved the sound, everyone was scared of me... i was just laughing in my small little mind of mine
cspbp Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 My 06 lx whistles at certain rps/speed. I actually like the sound lol.
