93dxcf Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Can any of you tell me what material the inside of a cooler is made of? What keeps the drinks cold in the cooler, is it some sort of special insulating material?
93dxcf Posted February 20, 2006 Author Posted February 20, 2006 The reason I ask is because I want to turn my spare wheel well into a cooler for this summer. I plan on insulating the whole thing with a lid and drill a nice little drain hole. Any advice on what to use?
TLontheDL Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I think its just double layer of plastic? I know its more to it than that. You also might want to look into buying the rubber seal that goes around the refigerator door to seal in the air.
CRG7 Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 not sure, but an old friend of mine did this in his impreza a while back... just do a google search on it, you're bound to find something
93dxcf Posted February 22, 2006 Author Posted February 22, 2006 now if I glassed the wheel well, or maybe sprayed down some foam and then glassed it, do you think the fiberglass would hold up to the melting ice (i.e. bubble up or crack).

Probably, but you'd want to make sure it's 100% leakproof when you were done making it. I'd venture to say that it still wouldn't have great cooling properties doing that though.
mountaindewguy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 im sure its like plastic on plastic w/ lightweight silicone (spelling is wrong) or something...
BigBirdSucks Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 nope, it's actually styrofoam with plastic over it. if you make your trunk into a cooler, make sure you put in a drain plug.
xalexjx@yahoo.com Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 most coolers have a lay out similar to this plastic<vacumed air>placstic thats the most effiecent way,,also house windows are designed the same way
