    Rough Terrain

Looking for some common sense advice here. My 2007 Mazda pickup is dying at 77K miles so I am looking for something reliable I can lug groceries, cats and such in. I had a CivIc hatchback and loved that so again looking at Hondas. I spent today at dealerships looking at used 2012+ CR-V's but the idea of spending 17K on a vehicle I am definitely going to rough up seems crazy. I am in deep country upstate NY, do not have a garage but do live on a road where heavy vehicles throw lots of dirt and rock at my parked cars. AWD/4WD is a must because of the ice / snow here but I don't want to waste money on "pretty". How do I find the Honda's that run great but don't look so great?
