black smoke top

Recommended Posts

This is interesting guys...I thought a del sol was definitely a girl car. Guess not... Most of my guy friends are WAY too big to fit in my car. I bought my '93 last spring and have had a total blast with it, but I'm totally bummed because the extra black smoke (plexi-glass ?) top is falling apart. The stock top is a real drag after having used the glass one exclusively. It's like having a full moon roof. Love it! I've tried having it fixed but it didn't hold. Anybody have any idea where I can find a new one? Lollie

www.import-tech.net

Ashley's a mod on here and the owner of that site. It's called the ameripol top and she carries them. They're around $600 plus shipping though.

Thanks a lot ordered the top. Now I need to tackle the job of changing the seals, leaks like crazy. Any tips? Lollie

SolLesHonda put new seals on his fairly recently I believe. He probably knows where to get them. For a temp fix, get some silicone lubricant and spray it on a rag, then wipe down all your seals really well. Soak the rag pretty well and then rub them down. It will get rid of squeaking and rattling problems and help some with the leaking.

Yeah, I did. I ordered them at Honda, and got a place called ater Works to put them on. All in all, it ran me about 850, because I knew the guy at Water Works. Normal Seal job will run about 1500 for everything.

I got all seals though, doors, roof, engine bay, trunk, etc.

thats so much money for some wierd shaped rubber tubing.

Wow! I agree that's a lot for weird shaped tubing. Didn't mind the money for the new top, but think I'll try the silicone first. I wonder if the new top will make a diff too. I find that the stock top doesn't leak as bad as the old ameripol did. I don't use a top that much anyways. Has to be really pouring before I put it on!

Thanks for the help B16Vtec. I appreciate it. I have silicone lubricant and will try it when I get home. I had a spot of luck this morning. My windshield is SO bad. Almost impossible to see out of when sunny. A semi wiped it out on the way to work this morning. Getting a new one Monday-Yeah! Lollie

yea it just goes over the top if its not raining hard. there are other things you can do to help with the squeeking and stuff. Teamdelsol has good info...

I just did this to my sol to make the chassis stiffer, its not very hard:

Tools you will need: A deep well 12mm socket and a 12mm open end wrench, ten washers 1/16th - 1/8 in thickness (less than $1.00)

1. REMOVE THE PLASTICS: First, you will need to remove some plastic from your interior & put your top inside your trunk to get it out of the way. The plastic that you will remove will be the sun visor assemblies, A pillar covers, dome light assembly, & roll bar interior plastic. To remove the interior pieces you will need to pry out the little circle behind the sun visor and remove the 4 screws, to remove the A pillar plastic you will need to get your fingers behind the plastic and pull with equally force / evenly on the plastic to unsnap the clips holding it securely to the pillar, to remove the dome light you will need to pry off the clear plastic then remove the screw underneath & then pry out the rest of the assembly, and finally to remove the upper roll bar plastic you will need to pry of this plastic in a similar manner as the A pillar plastic.

2. REMOVE THE BOLTS: You will see 3 bolts in each front corner holding the front roof pin receiver in place, and 1 bolt & 1 nut holding the rear roof pin receiver in place. I suggest that you remove one of these bolts (12mm) and take it down to your local hardware store to get washers that fit (1/1th-1/8th).. Carefully remove the bolts and place the washers between the roof pin receivers and the body of the car. Then replace the bolts and tighten securely. One washer per bolt is enough. We tried 2 and it seemed to help some, but the seals were mashed a little too far and water still seemed to get in.

3. TEST FIT: After all the washers have been put into place try a test fit. You may have to lightly press down on the top to twist the handle and lock the top down. Now with your proper fit of the top & it being satisfactory tightened to the car you can now put your top back in the trunk.

3. FINISHING UP: Replace the plastic on the interior of the of the Sol and enjoy a more water tight top. Don't forget a slightly tighter chassis when your top is in place.

yea, I forgot to meantion that. I brought mine down 3/16" in front, I didn't do the back one because on my last sol that was the only place that leaked.

Mine seems to only leak in the front too. Thanks for the really clear instructions that I think even I can follow. Opening the trunk is a real pain when it's raining but ah...I deal. Last summer was an unusually wet one and I think I've set a new record for getting the top on. A friend was ragging on me 'cause she doesn't have to get out with her beetle, just pull over. Stated hers was much faster! Drove into sudden downpour and pulled in front of a beetle with the top 1/4 to 1/3 up. I had my top on, windows rolled up, and was driving away while the other driver was still waiting for his top. Yeah! Had to get out! Laughed all the way down the road.

lol. I like the power rear window. I think it's my favorite part of the car. but anyway, it doesn't take that long to put the roof on. del sol > beetle

Love the rear window too. had it down tonight even though pretty cold out. Once I get the top off though takes A LOT to get me to put it back on! Keep blankets in the trunk for the night cruises to the ocean. Fav was the trip to Hampton Beach to see WWE house show. Car was the hit of the strip.

Yeah, even though we have to manually put our tops on, it's still faster than most electric convertible tops. Except my dad's S2000 conv. top is insanely fast.

Can't beat the looks we get when we put out tops in the trunk tho! People are always shocked when they see how roomy it is. I tell them it has enough room for a body. OK, maybe that beats the other looks. lol Then there's when I tell them I'm going topless...

Virginia?

Nah! About now I wish. Would you believe NH? Originally from Minnesota though. Guess a Northern girl all the way. After reading some strings I guess I lucked out on my del sol. Some mods had already been made. Awesome rims-TWO sets! Ameripol top. Nice little stereo-but I already blew a speaker. That's a priority fix! And some power enhancement under the hood. Just don't ask me exactly what! Def a NOOB! Working on that tho. Had a cool exhaust tip, but lost that pretty quickly flying around curves. Def need more power on hills but otherwise I've outmanuevered and outrun anybody chasing me! lol..lie

We have Hampton Beach with long beach strip. Great venue Hampton Beach casino Ballroom. Really small, incredible wrestling events and concerts-they're practically in your lap. Great bar service too. Sorry, helps to be a girl when it comes to cops. Except when I first got the car, had motorcycle cop literally circling me trying to find a reason to stop me lol. I'm really careful about turning down the tunes as I get farther into town tho. I tend to really blast it.

Thanks for the Jersey warning, travel down there frequently. Only trouble so far are hicks in jacked-up trucks wanting to play with the girl in the little red car
