Abs Problem

Hi

Anyone collected info on the V6 ABS system failing [light comes on and a buzzing noise at startup]. It appears that this was a design problem which ends up with the modulator leaking oil and making the light come on due to lack of pressure [buzzing noise is the pump]. Apparently Honda actually took half of the repair cost in some cases but not now. This stupid thing costs about $900 in parts alone.

I want to puit pressure on my Honda dealer to eat some of the cost.

Thanks

i was able to get some recall info, but it's restricted so this isn't the entire recall list. this is for a 2000 Honda Accord V6 (i just took a guess on the year :) ).

Thanks for the interest !!

This is a 1996 V6 sedan, the 6 cyl ABS unit is different than the 4 cyl design. When I got a 2nd opinion [due to Honda's cost] at an independant garage he told me this was a known problem. When I then confronted Honda with this they acted like they didnt know and would ring me back. That was 3 weeks ago........

I want to beat them up a bit today.

Many thanks for that OverbOOst !!

That looks very promising, I have the exact thing described in 96050 TSB. Am I understanding this table correctly - they all have their own TSB number but are grouped under a document called :

"98-061 NOV 01 A/T - In-Warranty Exchange Program "

Thanks again for the help

I have always known that the buzzing at startup is the ABS pump chargning the system. Over time the pump (the buzzing) has stayed on longer and longer until now the pump will continue charging until an ABS error code is thrown.

I pulled the motor relay to save the pump, but will plug it back in to pull the codes.

I am certain there are some of you out there that will already know what the code is and have a solution already resolved.

I have searched a few other forums and have hear everything from faulty o-rings at the bottom of the accumulator to leaking cylinder plugs.

I am first going to pull the codes, then buy enough brake fluid to properly bleed this thing.

I will keep you guys up to date, but would like to have others share their experiences.

We always tell the newbies to search the forum for an answer to their problems. Well, I searched, and this thread was the closest to describing my problem. Funny, I searched "ABS" and got nothing. This thread was found by searching "buzzing".

Edit: Too bad Scamparoni is probably not an active member any longer, he had a 1996 Honda Accord EX-V6.

2nd Edit: ROTFLOL, This is Scamparoni's ONLY thread. He made one thread, posted two responses, and then he took off.

Okay so I pulled my codes...

Winter2008038.jpg

Code 4-1: Description: Wheel Sensor, Right-front

Reason: Funny story, I was doing a brake job and left one of the bolts behind the hub loose. A few days later it finally worked itself loose and fell out. Just not before it could lodge itself between the wheel sensor and the CV Axle. The bolt ground the gear pulser smooth.

Code 1-0: Description: ABS pump motor over-run

Probable Causes:

1. Air mixed in the ABS brake fluid

2. Pressure switch stuck OFF

3. Open circuit between the pressure switch and ABS control unit

4. Open circuit in the P-SW circuit between the pressure switch and body ground, or a poor ground

5. Drop in pump discharge volume

6. Leaking outlet valve

7. Leaking relief valve

8. ABS brake flluid leakage

9. Faulty ABS control unit

I am going to reperform the bleeding procedure next payday. Again, any ideas, feel free to contribute.

I am thinking I have some kind of slow leak and/or air in the pump. I will re-bleed and pressure wash the engine bay. This way I will be able to spot any new leaks, versus any slow weeping seals.

FYI, Honda T/N 07PAZ-0010100 ($5.00 at Honda) will pull codes from the ECU for the PGM-Fi as well.

My code is 1-8, High pressure somethingorother. Bleeding might help, but you need a vacuum pump, which I'm not sure where to get. A new ABS pump/accumulator is around $100 on ebay with a warranty, but I'm not sure how difficult it is to replace. The Haynes says the ABS system is way more complex than you realize and doesnt even recommend working on it without a professional or a separate ABS manual.

Honda techs are a lot better sometimes in around where I live...as I've found out...

mine...I went for a compression test and the mechanic was reading off the OBD reader and he is like you are running a bit rich and I said yes and I'm fixing that by changing the injectors. He said no the injectors won't do anything (going bigger to stock) and sure enough, when I changed them afterwards, it got fixed! he probably knows a lot more about other things than me, but this one I knew what I was talking about lol

EDIT: sorry for the thread jack...back to topic :D

...without a professional or a separate ABS manual.

Helms gives the bleeding procedure. No mention of professional help, although I recomend professional help to others all the time, but I am fine.

Bleeding might help, but you need a vacuum pump...

The procedure is rediculously simple, no vacuum pump needed. Run the pump (key in the ignition), run the pump again and open the bleed bolt while it's running then close the bleed bolt when no more aerated fluid is pushed through, repeat.

The Haynes says the ABS system is way more complex...

Don't get me wrong, the system is complex, the Helm manual devotes 9 pages just to explaining exactly how it functions.

My code is 1-8, High pressure somethingorother.

Code 1-8: High Pressure Sensor. The high pressure sensor is really just a mechanical switch attached to a hose, you might want to look into cleaning it, the mechanism might have some binding issues.

Other possible issues:

1. Accumulator gas leakage

2. Changed relief valve set pressure

3. Rear outlet solenoid valve late to close

A new ABS pump/accumulator is around $100 on ebay with a warranty,...

I bought an AC compressor on eBay and the warranty it came with was written in such a way that the manufacturer and the distributor was to be held harmless unless the compressor suffered a sudden and catastrophic failure. The compressor does work, but it moans like a whore and has a high/low pressure difference of about 50psi when it should be 85-100psi. So technically it works and the warranty doesn't apply, but in reality the thing sucks.

You know, fool me once and all. So no eBay, unless I get desperate.

...but I'm not sure how difficult it is to replace.

It's easy cheesey

Wow, thanks for clearing up some of that stuff! The thing is, it doesnt happen all the time. Usually, but not always. And when accumulator does charge without the light coming on, the ABS works perfectly. It's really hit or miss when i turn that key. Sound like a simple cleaning of the sensor? Leakage i would think it would never work. Where exactly is that sensor at? Would bleeding help my situation or no?

I searched the code you mentioned "high pressure..." :

"may indicate a failure to build up pressure because the fluid level is low or there is air in the system. There's a special "maintenance bleeder valve" under a red cap on the modulator that must be opened to relieve pressure inside the modulator any time the modulator, pump or accumulator is serviced. Honda has a special T-handle wrench (07HAA-SG00100) that can be used for this purpose. To relieve pressure, turn the bleeder screw one complete turn (key off), then stop. Wait until the pressure is relieved, then close the screw."

this might help?
