05 Element dying. What's your take?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I'm having an issue with an 05 Honda Element. I've asked a few buddies about the symptoms it's giving and can't seem to pin point the problem so I am just looking for some more opinions.

95% of the time this happens when the car is cold. You start it up, drive 100 ft to the stop sign and it dies. No check engine light.
Fire it back up, most of the time it will be ok from there.

It is getting worst though, sometimes now it will die right after you start it like it can't idle when cold.

Fuel pump? There is no in line filter on this car, apparently it's in the tank on the pump.

Today it was at it's worst. It died roughly the first 5-6 times I came to a stop after firing it up.

So many things. Like TL said: loose chassis grounds and battery terminals play hell with Honda designs.

Try cleaning your IACV. On a Honda intake the IACV gets fouled out pretty easily. It directly controls your idle speed. One test for this is to disconnect it and see if the car runs much different. If the IACV is malfunctioning your symptoms of dying when cold should stay just about the same with it unplugged. This will cause your CEL to turn on. It will go off on it's own after a few days but it's best if you have a method to reset it after you do this otherwise your fuel mileage will suffer from the car running on a fail-safe rich state.
