97preludesh
My timing belt broke on my 1997 prelude as I was driving is my motor shot
Xeryon
No. You didn't need to make a new thread for this. The motor isn't shot, the head might be. Only way to know would be to pull it off and inspect the valves to see if any are broken or bent. Alternatively you could slap a new belt on there and see if it explodes. Seriously though, the pistons likely impacted the valves and bent some. You'll need to either replace the head or repair it. the cost will greatly depend on how capable of a mechanic you are. 97preludesh
Yeah I'm new to this. I'd rather not have the thing explode. So I'm gonna take the head off and take a look at the valves. Thanks for your help. I'll let u know how it goes
97preludesh
Should I find tdc b4 taking my head even tho my timing belt was shredded as I was driving
Xeryon
Shouldn't matter. It's already way off time. trying to adjust it right now isn't going to do anything productive aside from making pistons bang into already bent valves. if the belt was still intact finding tdc now is imperative to saving your sanity. with the head off you can rotate the block to a tdc setting without risking more damage to the pistons or cylinder walls if valve pieces broke off and are sitting in there. likewise you will want to adjust the head as close to tdc when you go to put it back together so you don't damage anything trying to line it back up. Just grab a service manual and follow the step by step. It's a lot of work but not terribly difficult. There are also a lot of step-by-step walkthrough threads people have created on several other honda sites. I bet you can find a decent youtube video as well. Xeryon
Try cleaning your IACV first. There is also an adjustment screw on it that adjusts your base idle that can loosen. It's a quick and free first thing to try.
97preludesh
ive been checking my timing belt and it seems to me that it is making its way towards the outside of my cam gears. does that mean that i have it too tight or what does anyone think. Xeryon
It's self tensioning as long as the tensioner pulley is working. Is the belt still entirely sitting on the pulleys or is it overhanging?
97preludesh
its overhanging less than an 1/16" but i dont want to take any chances
Xeryon
You got me on that. I've never had one walk that the belt wasn't 10 years old. The lower crank pulley has edges that should straighten the pulley up so that it is square throughout the routing.

Xeryon
Your bad luck just keeps on going. You are in uncharted territory for me. I would first figure out why it would have come loose. That answer might decide for you if you need to fix it or replace.
97preludesh
sucks too. the best part of this story is that the engine was rebuilt just b4 i bought it. took it off today. rod bearing is definitely showing signs of wear. hoping i can just replace the rod bearing put the thing back together and put a for sale sign on the window
